There is a ton of good information in the book. I did find some of the reasoning to be contradictory. I didn't agree with some of his focused vs big picture analogies. It was hard to follow in that section of the book and I think his point was not made clear.
Highly recommended!! This book strikes a perfect balance between Magness' personal experience as narrative throughline and then elevated with thorough research that is clearly explained. It offers perspectives that can help coaches, parents, athletes, creatives or really anyone who strives. But, what I love most about it is that it reminds you of how much you actually love doing hard things, one might call it suffering and thus one might wonder why do/would I do that to myself. Magness doesn't tell us why but rather he helps us understand why and also made me realize why the process of doing hard things is more rewarding than having done them. He also offers tools that help you remember that the next time you find yourself wondering- do I really want to do this?
The author tries to redefine the word “tough” when in reality what he is actually describing throughout the book is more self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Everything he says that is bad about the current ideology of “toughness” just seems like an excuse coming from someone who isn’t in fact tough. Sure, we have an idea of what tough means and it can be negative a lot of the time. But tough is tough. I don’t care what the “studies” show. Still a good book though.

I really enjoyed the approach and treatment in this book. Toughness and Resilience are developed in ways different than much of what I learned. As a volleyball coach, it has reshaped my thinking on how to develop these attributes in athletes and help them navigate their emotions.
I used this book as a sort of book study for the high school team I coach. I picked out meaningful quotes and sections to use when addressing the whole team at meets, and it seems to have done wonders for the mentality the athletes use when approaching challenging tasks.
I really enjoyed this book. The new notion of toughness is great and something I will be using moving forward. Will absolutely recommend to read this one!
