While I bought this to help support my toddler I have found such a beautiful overlap for parents dealing with their own emotions. The beginning starts with an acknowledgment of how our parents operated from the research and science of the day, we know now it’s incorrect. I really loved that the authors chose to start the book that way. That it’s not our fault that we need correction from what we grew up with and it’s not our parents fault either. There’s something about that gentle level setting that was really humanizing and loving.

Just received the book now and haven’t read it yet. 150 pages are stuck together and I have to cut through each page with a knife. A few pages already ripped in the process. I could have definitely not gifted this book.

If you have littles, you need this!

Good but wish it didn’t support ABA

The book is helpful to learn a different way of approaching parenting. It discourages punishments and rewards like sticker charts until it gets to a short paragraph where the author writes that ABA (behaviorism approach) is respected for use with autistic children for “prosocial” behaviors. So don’t use behaviorism on neurotypical children but it’s fine for autistic children. Overall, the book has more details on how to implement calm parenting, but I’m not impressed by including pro-ABA sentiments.

This has been monumentally helpful in my own ability to regulate myself with my kids and to help them regulate when they are overwhelmed by their feelings. I'm a therapist and so the info is lots that's I've already heard, but it's written in such a digestible way that it's my go-to recommendation for the families I work with.

Brilliant & Enriching!
