My father was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I bought this for my mother to help her begin to understand and make a plan for his care. She has found so much helpful information that she has shared with the rest of us. I highly recommend this for any caretakers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s.
Easy read.
It's really geared towards people who have multiple family members all pitching to help the one with dementia. I'm the only person helping my dad, so, at first I thought this book was not relevant for our situation, however, there's so much good info in there, I'm keeping this book as an excellent reference.
Great book would buy again but Amazon delivered it and left it in the rain. It is a paper back book in a paper envelope .
This is an invaluable resource for every mental health professional, clergy person or hospital chaplain. Period. Invaluable help for families navigating the unwelcome journey alongside a loved one entering into or with dementia. Supports relationships within the family and supports the person they are losing. Highly recommend this book!
This terrific resource, updated every few years as the science evolves, will help any care-giver, family member, or friend who wants to understand more. It’s not a “sit-down & read-through” book, necessarily. I think for most people it’s most valuable to review the table of contents and the index, so you know where to go for information on whatever are the issues you are facing at the moment. For a person in the early stages of dementia, it can serve the same purposes.
My brother-in-law's neurologist recommended this book for my sister. We, her sisters, decided to read it, too, in order to support both of them. I loved this book! It is quite comprehensive and written in a manner that all can understand. The author covers most every possible situation that may arise explaining ways to cope with each event and what to learn for next time. There are anecdotal stories included to help visual situations, too. I have a medical background and wanted to read it cover to cover, but the author does suggest that you read each section that applies to your situation (sort of like a reference book). I have a friend who is struggling with different changes in each of her parent's neurological status, so I bought this book for her. She, too, is understanding a lot more now, too.
It did take me a moment to find mt rhythm in reading but once I reached the sections explaining and offering suggestions of ideas on how to handle different parts of the dementia and what to expect I couldn't stop reading. I marked many places in the book to share with family so that our actions would work together as we help and support each other and our loved one.
