I bought this for my granddaughter who was having trouble with algebra this past school year. This is a smallish, fat little book with lots of notes and simplified explanations. After reviewing her "official" algebra text book, (700 pages and five pounds), I could see why she was having trouble. She said that the notes in this book were simplified and easy to understand. I hired a tutor to help her but the granddaughter was all back up to speed within a few weeks. It's so important to not get behind in math. If you miss a few steps, it can really affect your future grades.
Good explanations and examples plus lots of practice. But be sure whoever you are working with will actually use it. Enjoy!
I used this book over the summer as a review and to prepare my daughter for 8th grade algebra. It's a great book, she actually was able to self pace and go through the initial review on her own. I did follow up with her as she advanced through the material. I found it had very good explanations via words and drawings!!!! I also purchased the geometry book for my HS son going into geometry as a 9th grader. Again, great pictures and explanations!!!
The book has a step by step approach. The provide a lot of examples. Also, they include the answers to the questions so you can make sure you are doing it correctly.
I bought this book as a 36 year old who used to be great at math, and this book has shown me I have forgotten so many things! The lessons are brief, but I still could figure out harder problems where I wasn't getting the correct answer on my own. Math just takes time to figure out in general. Patience is needed. Especially when it's a new concept or something we don't do every day. I could see this book being an assistant to middle schoolers/high schoolers who need the extra help. One thing I noticed is I did not do everything according to how the book teaches things. With math, there can be many different ways to solve a problem. This book just teaches one way per chapter which might not always be the easiest way depending on how we learn. It is a decent size book with over 600 pages. It gives a chapter, examples, and then problems for you to solve on your own per chapter with the answers on the next page. My only critique is that they only have the answers, not how to solve if you can't figure it out.
I just bought this Algebra I workbook and it's great. Looks wonderful...I glanced at the explanations on how to solve problems. I did not see an issue. They explain topics well. As for previous reviews mentioning wrong answers, I have not tested that out yet so I will update my review, if any issues arise. However, if they explain how to solve a problem well enough that you can do it on your own, then the answer book should not matter. Now, if you are not sure or are hesitant on your work as you work through the problems, then, yes, I get it. But the explanations have correct answers so far from me briefly looking them over... I would love for there to be an Algebra 2 Big Notbook and an Algebra 2 Workbook! Also, a college Algebra notebook and a college Algebra workbook. I would buy them asap! I can see these math books, as pictured in my review and including the middle school math book too, to be useful for those wanting to practice for the Praxis exams, Accuplacer exams, and even the GED exams. Plus, there's a geometry book as well. I bought it too, because, I was not so great at it back in high-school.
My twins are in 8th grade and taking algebra. It's been challenging for them, but once I bought them this book, it has helped them understand things better. It was recommended by their teacher and she was right about it helping them! Very clear explanations.
I ordered 5-6 Algebra 1 review books for my student to use for practice & reinforcement before taking her final Algebra exam, and also to fill in gaps on topics her teacher didn't cover. This is the best book of the lot! It is well laid out, engaging and interactive, the color schemes facilitate comprehension, and fits the bill in every way. It clearly lays out the need-to-know content, appropriately builds from one skill to the next, and provides a few practice problems with detailed explanations for each. The only topic I didn't find it to cover is piece wise functions. There are some practice problems but not a ton. If you're wanting repetition of lots of practice problems, this is not it. If you want to cover the material, ensure you have comprehension, and practice each topic, especially in an interactive and friendly format, then this is it. If you want to learn something that you missed or that the teacher didn't cover, this is it. Don't waste your money on the other books out there.
