I bought his set for my 6 year old in kindergarten to supplement the leveled readers he is being sent home with daily for practice. He loves Pete the Cat and I felt he was getting the same books a lot, and that this would help with variety. I was hesitant to order at fist because there was no level or words per page or photos to help me figure out if these were appropriate, but I took a chance and glad I did! He is a solid level C reader according to his teacher, and this set of phonics books focusing on vowels is perfect. Plenty of site words and repeated phrases, with some longer, trickier words mixed in. With a read through first, and a little help when he needs it, he has no problem tackling these words. You may recoconize these modified versions of existing Pete the Cat stories, shortened, and reformatted using a simple bold font on the left page and illustrations on the right (except for last page). The colorful, familiar pictures offer clues to help with the unique words that are not sight words, which is a strategy they are using in school. For example- when the last page in the "Bad Banana" book introduces the word orange, there is a picture of pete with an orange to help them figure it out using their "eagle eye." Each book focuses on a specific long or short vowel sound, and has an intro page with a list of words to read through that have the sound, plus other words they will see, which is really helpful. Overall this is a really well thought out set, nicely contained in a neat little handled box. Spot on for beginning readers at or around this level. There are roughly 25 word per book on average. When we are through I will probably donate this to his kindergarten class, although not until next school year since I think we will comfortably use this set through spring and summer and into fall before being totally past them.

I purchased this set for my 3 year old child. They really seem to love the Pete the cat book set. It’s perfect for kids who are just learning how to read. We read a couple books out the book set every night right before bedtime.

These books are good but you need to know they are the short story of the real books. If you have read the individual books you realize these are the short story books. Quick reads for bedtime stories. Kids still love them.

I really liked the listing of the words at the beginning of each book.

These are very nice for beginning readers. You can ask some easy questions after reading to see if the child is comprehending.
