Didn't grab me

Ben Macintyre will remain my favorite author. However, the incident covered by the book was not sufficiently familiar nor gripping to maintain my interest. Macintyre remains the best narrator for his own material. However, unlike some of his earlier books, where the villains were as interesting as the heroes, in "The Siege," the bad guys are utterly unexciting. Maybe I'll try again with the print edition at some later date.

Free ARC from Net Galley 1980 was a long time ago for many but this was the English 9-11. No movie can come close to these pages as the story of 26 hostages is expanded into the lives of the 100's involved. Yes, it is action slim unto the end but that is why it was a success. The very best account I have ever read by far!

Another great Ben Macintyre work of non-fiction

Once again, Ben Macintyre has given us a great book “The Seige” tells the story of the 1980 taking of the Iranian Embassy in London by Arab militants seeking to compel the Ayatollah and his government to cease mistreatment of Iran’s Arab citizens and make good on their promises regarding the Iranian province of Khuzestan (a/k/a Arabistan). In straightforward, clear, and dynamic prose, Macintyre tells the tale from multiple points of view. We learn the involvements, backgrounds, objectives, and considerations of the various parties and individuals involved—everyone from the Iranian, Iraqi, and British governments, to many of the hostages and hostage-takers, to the police and military forces on the ground seeking to resolve the crisis. We’re taken into the embassy itself to spend time with captives and captors; to 10 Downing Street for high-level crisis resolution meetings; inside SAS training and planning; and to the genteel Royal School of Needlework that—notwithstanding its delicate collections of fabrics, tapestries, embroidery, and antique thimbles—suddenly became the base of operations for government forces. It’s a story that was overshadowed, at least in this country, by our own “Iranian Hostage Crisis.” Mr. Macintyre tells it well, keeping the tension high and providing the kind of detail that places readers amid the action. It certainly kept me turning its pages.
