Read by the author. No matter what you do for a living, how much time your apps save you, or how much entertainment your phone brings, it is possible to unplug—and find an even better life on the other side. In the spring of 2021, Hannah Brencher found herself depleted and exhausted—and she knew the culprit was her constantly plugged-in lifestyle.
Like so many of us, Hannah had been turning to her phone to cope with life in a time of isolation and uncertainty. Those coping mechanisms had calcified into habits she didn't know how to break. Sound familiar?
That's when the nudge happened. Turn off your phone and keep turning off your phone. And a challenge was born: 1,000 unplugged hours in one year.
Soon after she shared her tracker sheet on her website, thousands of people downloaded it and signed up for their own 1,000-hour challenge. Now in The Unplugged Hours , Hannah demonstrates how the act of powering down changed her entire life. It's a strikingly small thing to do and a surprisingly difficult habit to maintain, but turning off your phone has a substantial impact on your mental health, relationships, time management, and outlook on the world.
A powerful weaving of memoir, cultural commentary, and spiritual insights, this life-changing book helps you: Reclaim your ability to be present and engaged with the world around you Swap the hurried, constant pace of technology for a steadier, more rooted way of living Establish your own unplugged rituals and rhythms in daily life Uncover the magic within the ordinary awaiting you just beyond the screen The Unplugged Hours gives you the practical ideas and spiritual inspiration you need to stop scrolling and start living. I absolutely love reading anything written by Hannah. When ahe started sharing about her unplugged hours on social media, and I was sure I couldn’t do it and didn’t “need” to. Over the last few months I have become more and more aware of how much I need to unplug. But the more I feel the nudge, the more I set screen limits the more I numb in the hard moments and ignore the limits I set. This book isn’t a how-to, but it is a guide. It’s grace and encouragement. Hannah is the ever faithful companion bringing you along with her and encouraging you to join her; not because of her gain but of what’s waiting for you when you do start leaving your phone upside down or powered off to be completely present. So much of this book was a permission slip to rest, to begin where you are and to simply enjoy the process. I have entire pages highlighted and so many beautiful quotes to encourage me and speak over my children. These pages are Hannah’s heart and her warmth; reading it feels like sitting with a great friend. I have sent a few friends copies and I hope they love it as much as I have.
Hannah's writing is like an invitation to sit with a friend with no judgment - just listen to someone with great advice along with a cheer here and hug there. This book offers a practical solution for the overwhelm I've felt from the very digital presence around me - I mean when the power went on and off due to a storm the other day it was repeatedly announced by a voice NOT in my head when I could already see and sense it, thank you very much :) Hannah's easy to read book offers her very relatable experiences and challenges and offers hope - what a gift!
I was beyond excited to read the Unplugged Hours and it truly exceeded my expectations and has left me a better person. I now want to put into practice the heartfelt ideas that Hannah shares in this book. From the start to the finish of the book, you will be touched by every chapter even more the further you read, it’s hard to set down once you start reading it; it is that amazing. Hannah reminds us of so many important things that we may have forgotten or did not yet know; she provides us with a newfound hope, reminds us to be fully present and the purpose that serves, cultivating a spirit of enoughness, that faith is a lifeline, why we should clear the space, and most important is that we should take our time. This book is a must read, is life changing and beautifully written.. what are you waiting for?!
I find that it is Hannah’s vulnerability with her own experiences that has kept me always coming back. She is so real and relatable in her writing that I feel like I have known her for years. When I saw that she had a new book coming out I pre- ordered it immediately. My favorite thing about Hannah’s books is that somehow, they make me feel as if we were friends at a coffee shop, having one of those deep soul healing conversations that I always walk away from feeling challenged and encouraged at the same time. Unplugged is no different. Through sharing her own experience, she challenges us in such an honest, non-confrontational and encouraging manor to look at our own life and see how “unplugging” from our devices can bring us back to the present. This book could not come at more needed time for me, and I cannot wait to continue on this unplugged Journey.
This book felt like a hug that could end up changing your life. Hannah’s opennes in sharing her journey of unplugging and the process behind it is so beautifully written. Her writings are littered with grace in the process while pointing us towards each facet of life in front of us that we are missing when we live behind the screen. She gives voice to the shift that I think so many of us has felt but not expressed when it comes to the hold social media has over us, the way that it has invaded and affected our lens that we see everything through, and the way it has shifted how we connect with others. This book speaks to all seasons of life. The new graduate finding her path for the first time, the individual pursuing the career of their dreams, or a mom in the throws of motherhood can all find solace in the moments of presence shared within these pages. This book in many ways has felt like a key unlocking my heart bit by bit in the spaces that had become walled off because of the scary world that we find on our phone screen. Its a gentle reminder that the worlds on our phone are a gift and a tool, but they are not our life. Our life is in front of us. The life in front of us is ours to live in, to grow in and change, it doesn’t have to look like what we see on the screens. Our life is here in this present moment, and it can open wider the more we unplug. Since reading this book, I have started in slow steps of ruthlessly limiting the notifications that pull me to my phone, while also turning it fully off while in the presence of friends or at events. My voice doesn’t have to be as loud as all the others on the internet, but my voice matters here where it reaches. Here’s to more unplugging, and more loving the life in front of us without being trapped in the world of comparison.
