About This Book

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the Pulitzer-prize winning author, an alarming account of how autocracies work together to undermine the democratic world, and how we should organize to defeat them "A masterful guide to the new age of authoritarianism... clear-sighted and fearless… a masterclass in the marriage of dodgy government to international criminality… (both) deeply disturbing . ”—John Simpson, The Guardian " Especially timely.

"—The Washington Post We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence.

There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

Corrupt companies in one country do business with corrupt companies in another. The police in one country can arm and train the police in another, and propagandists share resources and themes, pounding home the same messages about the weakness of democracy and the evil of America. International condemnation and economic sanctions cannot move the autocrats.

Even popular opposition movements, from Venezuela to Hong Kong to Moscow, don't stand a chance. The members of Autocracy, Inc, aren't linked by a unifying ideology, like communism, but rather a common desire for power, wealth, and impunity. In this urgent treatise, which evokes George Kennan's essay calling for "containment" of the Soviet Union, Anne Applebaum calls for the democracies to fundamentally reorient their policies to fight a new kind of threat.

Good book, but it falls short

The author does a good job of laying out her arguments and the supporting evidence. She falls short with applying her critical look at autocratic elements of both the U.S. and Israeli society. She fairly calls out the Russian hospital bombings in Ukraine as abhorant and violation of international laws, as well as the horrific Hamas attack on Oct 7th. However, she uses Hamas to point to the inefficacy of the UN and stops there. She neglects to put a single critical statement about Israel's actions. With that omission, she undermines the credibility of her gobal analysis, exposes her biases and possibly even shows an example of autocratic influence of "changing the narrative" argument she makes about other countries. I really wanted to fully like this book. I think Anne has a good thesis and supporting evidence. She just falls short.

More Thorough Autopsy Needed

Anne Applebaum offers a much needed inside look into the hidden & dark bowels of kleptocratic connections in our world today. It has helped this reader connect the dots and begin to make sense of the often times confusing relations and seeming contradictions of the actions of certain heads of state (that is, the usual “Baddies” - China, Russia, etc.). I highly recommend this book, although it will require and hopefully inspire further and deeper reading and research on the readers part. Since it cannot answer all the questions that it raises. A more thorough autopsy is necessary, one that includes a more critical look at the U.S. itself and its role in perpetuating this beast as well as a more incisive look at Israel’s current military/technological/industrial government’s contribution to hyper-surveillance (e.g. Pegasus) software, technology, etcetera, and the millions of dollars involved.

The Autocrat playbook is being practiced not just in traditionally autocratic societies, but also in democracies like Israel, and perhaps the US should DJT return to power. The most valuable tool in the Autocracy arsenal that Applebaum describes is the instillation of apathy in the voting population, who becomes convinced that all politicians are equally corrupt. Not so. It’s extremely important to discern the difference. This is a must-read for any citizen of the world that cares about the health of open, democratic, pluralistic societies, or wants to restore these values to their own society.

Anne Applebaum does a great and thorough job of explaining the network of countries who want to destroy democracy. A terrifying but necessary read.

I read this book to understand what the driving forces are here in the U.S. and abroad. The book did not disappoint. The author lays out a concise history of the connections and forces (people and groups) working to undermine democracies around the world. A must read for anyone who has little understanding of globalization.

Paints some frightening pictures.

In her latest offering, “Autocracy, Inc.,” historian and author Anne Applebaum explains which nations have become autocracies, how they now work together, who their leaders are, and the various strategies and tactics they currently employ to undermine and destroy democracy around the world. Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, and many others have no interest in protecting human rights, only in fostering their own sovereignty, i.e., their ability to control world events. Those who lead these autocracies care little for the welfare of the people they govern. As autocrats, they aim to amass absolute power. As kleptocrats, they build vast personal fortunes from monies stolen from their country's treasuries and citizens. And while Western politicians decry their abuses, Western bankers and businesspeople help them to hide what they’ve stolen. Well-researched and clearly written, Ms. Applebaum's 180-page treatise paints some frightening pictures. Readers interested in foreign relations, world affairs, the future of democracy, and possibly, the next great battle, will want to give it a try.

“Wow, Autocracy, Inc. is an absolute eye-opener! This book hit me like a ton of bricks. It’s packed with so much new information that it left me stunned. The way it uncovers the hidden shifts in the global power structure is both fascinating and downright terrifying. It’s like peeling back the layers of a world we didn’t even know existed, and what’s underneath is pretty scary. If you’re interested in understanding the forces shaping our world today, this book is a must-read. But be warned—it’s going to leave you with a lot to think about.”

Anne Applebaum is the best, most informed and most insightful writer on this topic. Her long form journalism for The Atlantic is extraordinary, and in this small volume she gathers her best insights into the danger facing us as we slide blindly into autocracy. A brilliant and beautifully executed book. If there were only one person I could go to dinner with it would either be Barak Obama or Anne Applebaum. If it were both I'd sit silently and listen. Highly recommended
