A searing, vital investigation of the Republican Party’s dangerous campaign to rewrite history in real time, from the Emmy Award-winning Rachel Maddow Show producer and bestselling author of The Impostors. “There is nobody…who has more influence on the way I think about politics than Steve Benen.” — Rachel Maddow For as long as historical records have existed, authoritarian regimes have tried to rewrite history to suit their purposes, using their dictatorial powers to create myths, spread propaganda, justify decisions, erase opponents, and even dispose of crimes. Today, as America’s Republican Party becomes increasingly radicalized, it’s not surprising to see the GOP read from a similarly despotic script.
Indeed, the party is taking dangerous, aggressive steps to rewrite history—and not just from generations past. Unable to put a positive spin on Trump-era scandals and fiascos, GOP voices and their allies have grown determined to rewrite the stories of the last few years—from the 2020 election results and the horror of January 6th to their own legislative record—treating the recent past as an enemy to be overpowered, crushed, and conquered. The consequences for our future, in turn, are dramatic.
Extraordinarily timely and undeniably important, Steve Benen’s new book tells the staggering chronicle of the Republican party’s unsettling attempts at historical revisionism. It reveals not only how dependent they have grown on the tactic, but also how dangerous the consequences are if we allow the party to continue. The stakes, Benen argues, couldn’t be higher: the future of democracy hinges on both our accurate understanding of events and the end of alternative narratives that challenge reality.

For once, this educated author, has documented the truths which the far right has tried to change to fit their agenda in twisting the truth from 2016 to the present!
Steve Benen has written a clear, readable and important book that should be read by everyone, regardless of political leanings. He lays out the facts in indisputable precision and then walks through how the facts have been redrafted as alternative facts by the republican party leadership. Republicans should be embarrassed and the rest of us appalled. The alternative facts explain why people believe in a past that did not exist.
This describes the Republican Partys complete meltdown. It should force you to vote no on any of their butt ideas.
Excellent overview of recent political situations. It helps clarify and explain what happened and what has happened since these political situations began. A MUST read for anyone interested in what is happening in American government today.
I was able to read this from our public library, and was interested hoe accurate it would be. Overall it is facts attached to strong opinions, and research was thorough and right on the spot most of the time. However I wasn't going to write a review, as I view it as just another political book released right before the crucial election, and I hadn't bought the book. What bothers me most is that once again all the one star reviews, none of which are verified purchases, and they all say more or less one thing, that everything in the book are lies.
This outstanding book describes how much of the Republican base has reframed events of the recent past- those that we all witnessed. The author’s premise is simply that what actually happened doesn’t really matter in the Republican base’s view, but what is critical instead is that people believe what they are telling them. The author examines January 6, the border wall, foreign interference, the government Covid response, the 2020 election and economics among others. He does not just present an alternate opinion of events; he backs up everything that he writes with clear supporting evidence, which is what makes this book stand out. (There is an extensive reference list.) I highly recommend this book. It is essential reading.
This book is an excellent summary of the false narrative pushed by the Republican party to the uninformed public over the last several years. The hundreds of examples of propaganda with corresponding verifiable facts is astounding.
It's a very interesting book about Trump and the MAGA party.... it really helps to understand the psychology of Trump and the MAGA party. I believe it to be a factual and truthful description, and explanation of the past few years of the MAGA paradigm. It's actually a very concerning overview. I highly recommend it for a quick reading... it's not too long, and doesn't waste any pages with hyperboles.
