About This Book

The debut poetry collection from Lyndsay Rush (aka @maryoliversdrunkcousin) is a humorous and joyful celebration of big feelings, tender truths, and hard-won wisdom, for fans of Maggie Smith, Kate Baer, and Kate Kennedy. At long last, a book of poetry for people who didn’t even know they liked poetry. And they’re in good company: author Lyndsay Rush didn’t know she liked it either.

That is, until she embarked on an internet experiment under the Instagram username @MaryOliversDrunkCousin that turned into a body of work that struck a chord with women across the country; thanks to her signature wordplay, witticisms, and―against all odds―wisdom. With titles like "Shedonism", "Someone to Eat Chips With", "It’s Called Maximalism, Babe", and "Breaking News: Local Woman Gets Out of Bed", Rush’s debut collection of poetry uses humor to grapple with the female experience―from questioning whether or not to have children, to roasting the patriarchy, to challenging what it means to "age gracefully"―and each piece delivers gut-punching truths alongside gratifying punchlines. Readers walk away from Lyndsay’s work feeling seen, celebrated, and wholly convinced that joy is an urgent, worthwhile pursuit.

With over 140 convention-bending poems―most of which are never-before-seen―this book is quite literally A Bit Much .

A Treasure-trove of YES, me too!

“A Bit Much” Poems by Lyndsay Rush I thought I did not like poetry, that it didn’t speak to me, that I did not understand poetry, that I didn’t know how to read poetry. Because that is what I learned from my college PhD holding English professor. But I have confirmed via this book, SHE was WRONG. I bet if you read just one or two of these poems you will be wanting to read the rest of them, too. By now you have guessed that I loved this collection of poems. And, I just might be daring enough to try reading another book of poems (someday?). Happy Reading ! !

Poetry for folks who don’t know they love poetry!

If y’all love @maryoliversdrunkcousin posts then imagine an entire BOOK of them! You are in for an absolute treat, my friend. I also love that this is a book of poetry for people who don’t know they love poetry, which is so relatable. I feel like I don’t like poetry until I actually read it and then I’m obsessed. Rush arranges the poems by theme, which is super helpful. May I also whole-heartedly recommend the audiobook to you?? Hearing Lyndsay Rush read her own poems really does bring them to a whole ‘nother level. This book was fantastic and must-read for anyone that really does feel like they are 💫 too much. 💫

**Thank you to St. Martin's Press for this free digital review copy.** I was a bit unsure going into this because I almost never read poetry, but I really enjoyed these poems! Many of the poems made me laugh, some made me sad, and they were all quick and easy reads, which I appreciated as a novice poetry reader. I even found myself highlighting lines on my Kindle and wishing I had a hard copy to mark up. I definitely would like to revisit this collection in the future.

Poetry about love, life, loving yourself, etc

A Bit Much was a fun, poetry book about love, friendship, the start of 2020 (but not too much, which I appreciated!), life and living it. There were so many quotes I liked/highlighted. It’s okay to be “a bit much” Some of my favorite quotes: “Today I learned that pecans fall from trees when they’re ripe and the best way to crack them open is to take two and squeeze them together in your hand—the pressure of the closeness exposing the good stuff Is that a nice metaphor for relationships?” “If cauliflower can be pasta you can be whatever you want.“ One of my favorite poem was “Caretaking Notes” Even at 39, we still need to be taken care of as if we’re a kid, because that inner child is still there regardless and I loved that message!

As a Christian, I found this book disturbing and it does not align with my beliefs. The author portrayed religion as a negative stereotype and connotation.. i do NOT recommend!!

I’ll be honest. I never have the best luck with poetry collections. Poetry is just not my jam, and the poems generally go WAY over my head! Well, I’m happy to report that I FINALLY found a collection that worked for me. A BIT MUCH by Lyndsay Rush was such a delight to listen to. I listened to it during my walk yesterday morning, and was smiling and giggling the entire time. It’s clever, humorous, and extremely relatable. If you’re a woman over 30, you’ll definitely vibe with this collection of poems. Rush covers a plethora of topics like: - Body image and positivity - Fashion and beauty - Diet and fitness culture - Self care and improvement - Negative self talk - Religion and politics - Social media, email, cellphones - Womanhood and aging - Motherhood and pregnancy - Love and relationships - The world after the pandemic I especially love that she’s from Minnesota! Woo hoo! Kinda, sorta local to me! Most importantly, this collection sends out some great messages like speak your mind, be yourself, and it’s never too late to be who you want to be, or do something you want to do. Get out there and be a bit much!

I placed little tags on each poem that resonated with me. I lost count at 26. I’m not going back to count the total. Just know that in this book of poems, they’ll be atleast one that makes your heart flutter-but there could also be more than 30.
