NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This is one of those books that will go down as the seminal work—the determinative work—in this field. . .
. Terrifying.”—Rachel Maddow The first definitive account of the rise and fall of the Secret Service, from the Kennedy assassination to the alarming mismanagement of the Obama and Trump years, right up to the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6—by the Pulitzer Prize winner and #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of A Very Stable Genius and I Alone Can Fix It NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST Carol Leonnig has been reporting on the Secret Service for The Washington Post for most of the last decade, bringing to light the secrets, scandals, and shortcomings that plague the agency today—from a toxic work culture to dangerously outdated equipment to the deep resentment within the ranks at key agency leaders, who put protecting the agency’s once-hallowed image before fixing its flaws. But the Secret Service wasn’t always so troubled.
The Secret Service was born in 1865, in the wake of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, but its story begins in earnest in 1963, with the death of John F. Kennedy. Shocked into reform by its failure to protect the president on that fateful day in Dallas, this once-sleepy agency was radically transformed into an elite, highly trained unit that would redeem itself several times, most famously in 1981 by thwarting an assassination attempt against Ronald Reagan.
But this reputation for courage and excellence would not last forever. By Barack Obama’s presidency, the once-proud Secret Service was running on fumes and beset by mistakes and alarming lapses in judgment: break-ins at the White House, an armed gunman firing into the windows of the residence while confused agents stood by, and a massive prostitution scandal among agents in Cartagena, to name just a few. With Donald Trump’s arrival, a series of promised reforms were cast aside, as a president disdainful of public service instead abused the Secret Service to rack up political and personal gains.
To explore these problems in the ranks, Leonnig interviewed dozens of current and former agents, government officials, and whistleblowers who put their jobs on the line to speak out about a hobbled agency that’s in desperate need of reform. “I will be forever grateful to them for risking their careers,” she writes, “not because they wanted to share tantalizing gossip about presidents and their families, but because they know that the Service is broken and needs fixing. By telling their story, they hope to revive the Service they love.”

Needed to be completely overhauled. It is the worst run agency in the government by the worst kind of ppl. That is hard for me to take in. Harder still is the lengths they will go to by not doing their job. Frankly I am surprised more presidents haven't been harmed. They allowed so many opportunities for it to happen. No1 can be that bad at their job unless it is on purpose. This is a riveting book that exposed all their warts and glories. The glories are fading into a memory after the information regarding J6. At the very least they did nothing to help the capital police and the targets of the insurrectionists were not warned they had credible threats until days after J6. That alone should be reasons they should be removed from service with no possibility of further government employment and investigations into why they withheld the info from the persons, along with appropriate prosecutions for endangering lives. The SS is astonishingly misogynistic to the point they sabotaged the Female head of the service bc they didn't want a female to be boss. The method of sabotage was not doing their own job. Being drunk on duty. Or nowhere to be found. Jeopardizing the lives of the protected. She stepped down for the good of the ppl the agency is supposed to protect. The things the Agents actually neglected that wld lead to someone dying rather than doing their job correctly. God & good fortune is all that stood between President Obama & his family being hurt or killed. The fact that the secret service is implicated in the January 6th sedition is no shock to me.. After reading how petty & narcissistic these agents are, The fact they erased all text messages from their system and phones after they were requested by the committee is 1 more reason why the entire agency needs to be replaced. They are supposed to be non partisan! The reason for that is obvious but it isnt happening. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The SS has been corrupted absolutely. You cannot come back from where they are now.. President Biden was tipped off not to use the presidential detail bcuz they wouldn't have done their jobs and he had to move his protection detail up from his Vice president days is absolutely unthinkable and the entire presidential detail should be fired. Never in our history has a president had to reject the SS presidential detail in favor of his Vice president detail. What if President Biden had not been vice president and had no history with any SS? It has been over a year since I read this book and everything written has come to pass & been proven factually correct. As Americans how can we have faith in our systems when everywhere we turn law enforcement inside the government has been corrupted? The SS has been bad for decades after reading this book but not to the degree it is now.. SS, FBI etc. What is it about the white male physiological profile that makes it so fragile they can't handle things we in the private sector have integrated so well? We as Americans want the people who have protection to be protected. As the facts have played out I don't feel they are on the same team as other Americans and that is a scary thing. How to start over is a question that isn't answered in the book but you will have no choice but to think about it. I for 1 am embarrassed that they behave as they do. It's a difficult job but if you are not up to the task, you should resign. Lives are at stake.
What an informative book about this so-called elite group of presidential security. Not so elite after all. The book flowed well, and I like how the author Carol Leonnig broke up the chapters by the years and who the presidential administrations were. This book really dispelled a lot of inaccurate portrayals of certain first ladies both good and bad not to mention one first lady who later ran for president her daughter and how that whole family was just flat out spiteful and not very kind to these agents who protected them. How phony that family was. And how supportive another first lady who took a lot of bad press herself was toward the service whose husband got shot and survived. But the real anger I built while reading this (I almost threw the book across the room) was how sexist most of these agents are, how unfaithful to their spouses a bunch of partying heavy drinkers some are and how they covered for each other even when the aforementioned resulted in security breaches that could have endangered the president at that time and his family. And thank goodness the news media was able to find out about these breaches and report to the public about them. But the finite details of those breaches got covered very well in this book. But also disturbing to me was when they had a woman in charge or someone from outside the service in charge how these grown men in the service went behind their back like little children to the point where the 1 woman and some of those men from outside the service in charge were either removed or forced to resign until those whistleblowers within the service responsible for their leaving got someone who was their buddy. Someone who would hopefully cover up their discretions so they could continue on unabated. I look at this group now in a whole different light. And our tax dollars are paying for this?
