About This Book

From Kristin Hannah, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the smash-hit novels Firefly Lane , The Nightingale, and The Four Winds comes a novel about how one reckless night destroys the lives of three teenagers and their families. For eighteen years, Jude Farraday has put her children's needs above her own, and it shows—her twins, Mia and Zach, are bright and happy teenagers. When Lexi Baill moves into their small, close-knit community, no one is more welcoming than Jude.

Lexi, a former foster child with a dark past, quickly becomes Mia's best friend. Then Zach falls in love with Lexi and the three become inseparable. Jude does everything to keep her kids out of harm's way.

But senior year of high school tests them all. It's a dangerous, explosive season of drinking, driving, parties, and kids who want to let loose. And then on a hot summer's night, one bad decision is made.

In the blink of an eye, the Farraday family will be torn apart and Lexi will lose everything. In the years that follow, each must face the consequences of that single night and find a way to forget…or the courage to forgive. Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness.

It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love. "You cannot read Night Road and not be affected by the story and the characters.

The total impact of the book will stay with you for days to come after it is finished." — The Huffington Post

Jude Farraday is an overprotective mother. Her twins, Mia and Zach, are her life. But now they are seniors in high school, maturing individuals with minds of their own. I liked Lexi Baill from the moment she was introduced. I really felt for this girl (my favorite character) and her situation. Sadly, she put herself down quite a bit. Her low self-esteem and longing to be a part of the Farraday family was certainly understandable. It was great that her great aunt, Eva, took her in even though she didn't have much. Lexi needed to know somebody truly cared about her. Because I liked Lexi so much, I found myself wanting to judge Jude - harshly - for her attitude towards Lexi after the tragic accident. But, as a mother, I could understand Jude's pain, her anger and her unwillingness to forgive. Still, I do not believe it was justice she wanted, but revenge. And the way she treated Grace - I could never relate to that. Everybody was walking on eggshells when it came to Mia and it's not that I didn't sympathize with what this teenage girl had gone through in the past, but `don't other people deserve to live happy lives' is the question I kept asking as I read. "She's in a better place." Aunt Eva spoke these words about Lexi's mother and Mia's family believed the same about her. From what I read about Lexi's mother, she was so far from saved. And Jude Farraday may have pleaded with God during a time of pain, but it was clear to me that a relationship with God wasn't something her family was interested in on a daily basis (page 176). This had to be words the families - like many non-Christians in real life - spoke to make themselves feel better about their losses, because from what I read neither Lexi's mother nor Mia gave Jesus any thought. He is `The Way, The Truth and The Life. Nobody comes to the Father except through Him. (John 14:6) I mean no disrespect towards the author, and I know this is not Christian Fiction, but all fiction sends messages to readers and that was not a good one. This book has long chapters with lots of scene breaks, so I did set the book down a few times because I grew tired of reading. I prefer books with short, to-the-point chapters, but that's just me. Kristin Hannah has written a story filled with life lessons for adults and teenagers. What I thought about most after finishing the book was how some young people can make the mistake of believing they are invincible; nothing could possibly ever happen to them. This story showed how irresponsible some of them can be and how they can make bad choices without thinking about the consequences. (The same is true for many adults) I was glad Lexi took responsibility for her actions. Still, her sentence was too harsh; she wasn't the only one at fault. This is the first time I've read Kristin Hannah's work. (The Things We Do for Love is in a pile of books I haven't gotten around to reading yet) Night Road was touching, thought-provoking and Hannah did a splendid job showing the stages of grief. I experienced feelings of happiness, sadness and I even became irritable at times - the story evoked emotions and, for me, that makes for a good read. I also love the cover; it's beautiful and sad at the same time.

Loved this book.

This was such a good read, so well written and the most poignant story I've ever read. KH created a story and characters of happy loving people who experience unimaginable heartbreak and find their way back from being broken, finding hope and happiness after tragedy.

A bit predictable, but still a great read

Only Kristin Hanna can do what she does: consistently write high-quality novels that transport the reader into a world she so artfully creates. I'm a full-time author and reader, so I'm highly critical of many best sellers. As an older male, many would think that I don't fit the demographics—the target audience—but Night Road had me turning pages so deeply involved that I wept—not easy for a man to admit. This author builds her characters with an honesty that draws the reader to them, making them jump off the page and sit beside you. Anyone with a heart will love this book.
