4.5/5 Stars⭐ This tale kept me holding on page after page. It is a slow burn the supporting character, Madame B., was enjoyable. The storyline was not predictable and the ending was not surprising. It was plot twist between Opaline and Lyndon. I did not see that coming. The miscommunication between Martha and Henry, hated it, but they finally got it together. If I had to pick a favorite character it would be Opaline. She was courageous, strong, and persevered through a very difficult situation. I would recommend this book to the reader who is seeking a cozy but slow burn read.
What a story! But I had to keep checking to see whose story I was reading now. Loved the characters, well some of them, especially Opaline and Martha and Henry. How their lives were interwoven. I have read stories about places like St Agnes that incarcerated people who were not mentally ill or that had babies that were taken away from them and told that the baby didn’t survive, which was not true. All that on the whim of an uncaring relative who just wanted to be rid of them. But there is more to the story than that. read it.
While this is a novel about books, it is also about the plight of women at the mercy of men, which made me very angry at times. I did enjoy the intertwining of characters and the bit of the mystical. However, by the midway point, I had to stop with the Martha and Henry chapters to finish the Opaline story, then came back to their chapters. It was too confusing, which is why I gave it 4 stars. However, I did enjoy reading it.
I was not able to put it down and finished it relatively fast. The writer allows for imagination to be used while envisioning the scenes unplaying. The end has a nice twist and the book jumps around like a time machine. The characters are relatable even while jumping timelines.
I loved it. I needed something to cheer me up, and this book did all I wanted. Don’t get me wrong, there was terrible testaments of human’s ability to be cruel, but this story also gave me encouragement. In it men and women excelled over difficult situations and were better for the experience. I would like to have seen some faith in God, but it was a great story regardless. Well written. The characters came alive on paper. Evie Woods made them real. I often found myself thinking about them and wondered how they would handle their given situation. I wept for them; I cheered for them. The dialogue was well written and kept the story moving along. And the plots were well thought out and delivered. Enough twist and turns that kept me constantly guessing. Thank you Evie. I enjoyed your work considerably.
This novel was so endearing, charming, so well written, it has found a permanent home on my bookshelf. The characters are well defined; their individual stories well told. There was nothing about this book I didn't like. I can see how it received so many 5 stars. I loved it and have recommended it to my book club, friends and anyone else who loves discussing books. Well done. Can't wait to read another of this author's novels.
