About This Book

The perfect pick to really light a fire under my book club, and yours....A reminder that goodness, and books, can still win in this world." — New York Times Book Review "A beautiful, big-hearted treasure of a novel." —Lily King National Bestseller * From the award-winning author of The One-in-a-Million Boy comes a heartfelt, uplifting novel about a chance encounter at a bookstore, exploring redemption, unlikely friendships, and the life-changing power of sharing stories. Our Reasons meet us in the morning and whisper to us at night. Mine is an innocent, unsuspecting, eternally sixty-one-year-old woman named Lorraine Daigle… Violet Powell, a twenty-two-year-old from rural Abbott Falls, Maine, is being released from prison after serving twenty-two months for a drunk-driving crash that killed a local kindergarten teacher.

Harriet Larson, a retired English teacher who runs the prison book club, is facing the unsettling prospect of an empty nest. Frank Daigle, a retired machinist, hasn’t yet come to grips with the complications of his marriage to the woman Violet killed. When the three encounter each other one morning in a bookstore in Portland—Violet to buy the novel she was reading in the prison book club before her release, Harriet to choose the next title for the women who remain, and Frank to dispatch his duties as the store handyman—their lives begin to intersect in transformative ways.

How to Read a Book is an unsparingly honest and profoundly hopeful story about letting go of guilt, seizing second chances, and the power of books to change our lives. With the heart, wit, grace, and depth of understanding that has characterized her work, Monica Wood illuminates the decisions that define a life and the kindnesses that make life worth living. "A deeply humane and touching novel; highly recommended for book clubs and fans of Shelby Van Pelt's Remarkably Bright Creatures." — Booklist

Touching Story

Thanks to Mariner Books for this copy of "How to Read A Book." This is the touching story of Violet, Harriet, and Frank and how their lives intersect and become richer through reading, loving, and sharing books. Thankfully they can see through and push past society's perceptions and expectations and genuinely connect with each other. I wish the book had a longer ending - it felt so abrupt after getting to know and care about these characters.

I loved this storyline. The characters were well written and likable, especially the parrots. I did not give it 5 stars because this reader needed a longer ending.

Not perfect, not brilliant, but a soul-reading read and it's as intellectual as you want to think

This story with its characters, including the parrot Ollie, live in a world we would like to know. The story is delightful. The characters are sometimes slippery to hold onto, but usually you learn to love and/or appreciate them for who they are. There is no trickery here. There were times I was certain I knew where it was heading, only to find i was dead wrong. Enjoyably so. This is not a perfect book or story. It is a book that is a terrific read with a great story. As I read on, I came to realize i could trust this artist; she was not going to pull a 'psycho' on me and I could trust and allow myself to love these characters, yes, even the parrots. I have no criticisms that I would mention here that would only serve as spoilers which I will not do. I really had a great time reading her book and I will to see which others of hers I will find.

Delightful indulgence

The characters in this book are well-explored and instantly real. As in all great stories, there are “good guys” and “bad guys” but all of them are given enough backstory to understand a bit about why they are the way they are. The addition of the birds made me smile throughout. Whenever I picked up the book I felt like I was comforted by Harriet, Frank, and Violet —all people I came to love.

Good storyline and easy to read

Sometimes when books are written from different POVs, it is often hard to keep track of which character is speaking the narrative. The author here make it very clear who is speaking, and what characters they are! We get to know who they are and how they got where they are when the story begins. It seems a bit coincidental the first time the characters meet, but their friendship seems natural and not forced. I thought the ending was a little cliche, and I won't spoil it here. This is a good book and I enjoyed reading it.

An Absolutely MUST Read!

I read an average of three books a week, and it is rare that I take the time to write reviews, unless the book is egregiously bad or absolutely sublime. How To Read a Book falls into latter category. First, it has the best animal character since Six-Thirty in Lessons in Chemistry: an African Gray Parrot named Oliver, and you will wish you could free him from the printed a page and take him home to live with you. Second, all three of the primary human characters are pitch perfect. Their voices are distinct, charming, and completely believable. The twining of the plot lines makes for a compelling story; I had pages and pages I tabbed for language, terrific humor, and deep understanding of the human heart. You may want to pick up a copy of Spoon River Anthology for consultation as you immerse yourself in Monica Woods’ fascinating novel ( you’ll see why when you get there). No need to rehash the plot here; there’s lots of info on these Amazon pages. Just do yourself a huge favor and read this book. It is a memorable experience. Promise.
