Bought this book on a recommendation from a family member after my hubs was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. He'd been type 2 diabetic for at least 12 years, taking medication and trying to manage it that way. His GP never told him how serious his kidneys had gotten until he was denied a heart stent 3 months ago because of the stress the procedure would have placed on his kidneys. I read this book cover to cover - twice, with hundreds of highlighted passages - and what I took away from it was 1) constant snacking throughout the day (even on "healthy" foods) does our bodies no good, as there is a constant struggle between insulin producing organs and insulin resistant cells, 2) intermittent fasting, done in a reasonable manner, can give your body a chance to "rest" for even a few hours and quiet that constant insulin-insulin resistant battle, and 3) whole, natural foods are what your body needs (duh) and stop overfeeding your cells! You will not die if you skip a snack. We decided we needed to do something radical to give his kidneys a chance to "rest" and hopefully reset. We decided - together - to clean out the pantry of high-carb, high-sugar, high-sodium, low nutrition foods. We cleaned out the freezer of all pre-prepared meals, looking specifically at the hidden sugars and sodium. Oh, how it hurt to get rid of chips, pretzels, candy, frozen meals, and dips. Hubs used to snack all day on Twizzlers, Goldfish, Doritos, Take 5 bars, and anything else he could find grazing in the pantry. Now, he's gotten quite proficient at reading food labels! We do allow ourselves the occasional "cheat", but we know know that, according to the book, "the poison is in the portion". If we want a questionable snack, we choose the least unhealthy we can and we portion control. We are only human, after all... The hubs' cardiologist, nephrologist, and PCP are skeptical of the approach we've taken for the past two months to eat between 6am and 3pm only with no snacking, but I can tell you that hubs' daily glucose went from close to 300 to less than 130. Some of his medications have been changed. He doesn't need daily naps. He has more energy. He's sleeping through the night with no muscle cramps. I've been doing intermittent fasting myself (a little more rigorously than he has) and I've dropped 20 lbs in 2 months and have way more energy than I did before. My digestive issues have calmed way down. Most surprising is that my daily chocolate craving has disappeared (no desire for chocolate at all for the past 9 weeks, and I used to make entire meals out of M&M's or Take 5 bars), and my daily glucose reading has gone from around 180 to less than 120. Yes, check with your doctor before embarking on any severe diet change. This approach doesn't require you to not eat for days on end. You CAN tailor this approach to your own likes, dislikes, and tolerance. And, it feels empowering to know you CAN control what you CHOOSE to eat, and that you can see quick benefits. You control the food, the food does not control you.

The information in the book is good, but the introduction pretty much said it all. Fast Like a Girl is a better choice for me. Follow both authors, Jason Fung and Mindy Pelz on YouTube. The 2 of them are full of information for your healing journey.

I've had this book for over a year and never got around to reading it. What a huge mistake that was. Dr. Fung has a gift of explaining complex medical issues in very understandable terms. He presents the history, research, and plan without drama, sensationalism, or fear-mongering. His recommendations are super easy to follow and effective. And, the protocol is absolutely free! No prescriptions. No special foods to eat. No supplements and powders to purchase. No medications for life. Quite the opposite. His plan will free you from the expense of being sick. Thank you Dr. Fung. This book has been life changing and I am leading by example for my children. Update: 2/28/24 - 31 days of this protocol and my bloodwork for glucose came back almost normal. No longer firmly in the D2 range. Reminded GP that I was eating Carnivore with IF and longer fasts and he said, "Keep doing what you are doing."

The book is an easy read, and makes so much sense. The best part is that it gives lots of hope and inspiration to overcome a disease that was considered unstoppable and incurable! In 2023, my A1C was a little elevated -- right on the cusp of normal and pre-diabetes. My Doctor recommended I read this book and I wish I had done so at that time! However, I did lower my carb intake during the summer and fall, and two A1C tests 3 months apart showed an A1C n the normal range. The holidays came and life got busy, and I slipped back into my normal eating habits. This year when my A1C was tested -- it was squarely in the middle of "pre diabetes". Talk about motivation! But this time I have read the book! In addition to a very low carb diet, I have begun a daily fasting regimen 0f 16 to 19 hours -- and already feel better, although I won't get my blood tested again until next month. In the future, I am considering a 24 hour fast 2-3 times per week.
