I am a diyed -in-the-wool Elizabeth Peters fan, and also love her books written under her other name Barbara Michaels. It is great to be able to go to Amazon.com and be able to find the older titles, and to get them from the many book stores that sell used books thru Amazon.com. I have gotten real bargains on both paperbacks and hardbacks, and have added a lot to my collection.
I have read all of Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters books I have Liked 99o/o of them. Most I have read more than once or twice or three or fours times over the sixty or so years she has been writing. Like a happy reunion with old friends. This book is lighthearted fun with a good dash of suspense, a taste of Scots and English history, and laugh out loud humor. The plot and characters are ageless.
I've loved Peters since I first read The Jackal's Head. I just 're-read this one and it still a great read. I'm slowly all of the Peters and Michaels books to my Kindle to revisit whenever the mood strikes. Younger readers will find them a bit dated but will overlook that flaw if they try them.
Whether she wrote as Elizabeth Peters or as Barbara Michaels, this author never disappointed. Anything and everything she wrote was without flaw. This story is a clever mix of an adventure and a romance, with fascinating and sometimes quirky characters and plot lines, and the pace never bogs down.
This is a standard non-series Elizabeth Peters novel, which is to say a good quick read that does not linger in the memory. As usual, this one features a young archaeologist heroine, picturesque locale (Scotland), sympathetic if sharp tongued young hero, danger, intrigues, etc. I don't think it is as good as either the Amelia Peabody or the Vicky Bliss novels. It's still, however, a pleasant read, buoyed by Peters' humor and habit of inserting interesting bits of local information.
This book, like all of her novels, is pure chocolate to read. Her characters are likable and believable. The story is full of action, romance and humor.
I enjoyed the Scottish history. Not one of her best books but it is readable. Somewhat silly. 3 1\2 stars
By chance, and a love of Scotland, I stumbled upon this book. I’m not normally a lover of mysteries but this author may certainly change my mind. Twist after twist made the ride so enjoyable that I finished it in one sitting. I even laughed aloud which is not usually like me. Thank you Elizabeth Peters for such a fun read.
