In a deeply personal follow-up to his #1 bestseller This is the Fire: What I Say to My Friends about Racism , a modern media iconoclast faces a test of faith—and reveals how such tribulations can make us stronger, as individuals and as a nation. Renowned journalist Don Lemon always had a complicated relationship with God. He cherished the Southern Black church he was raised in, but struggled with the fundamentalist rejection of his right to exist as a gay man—one who wanted to marry his longtime love in a church wedding with all the traditional trimmings.
In his work as a reporter, moreover, he saw his fellow Americans losing faith in a higher power, in institutions, and in each other. Setting out to understand the place that religion has in our lives today, Don turned a journalistic eye on ancient stories and found connections that sparked memories, conversations, and chance encounters. Then, suddenly, his world unraveled: In a blaze of inglorious headlines, Don was ousted from his high-profile network news job and tasked with redefining his role in the shifting media landscape.
But through a year of personal changes and professional whiplash, he kept his “eyes on the prize” and ultimately found what he was seeking: grace, within himself and in this nation we call home. Rich with humor and Louisiana realness, I Once Was Lost is a prayer for a country that reflects the multifaceted image of God and a clarion call to those who believe in our common humanity enough to fight for it.
The journey to discover God often takes surprising turns and for one seeker, America becomes the canvas where questions of faith and identity are explored. This introspective and transformative journey across diverse landscapes and cultures becomes as much about self-discovery as it is about understanding the divine. In "I Once Was Lost: My Search for God in America," the reader embarks on a pilgrimage that challenges preconceived notions and unravels rich tapestries of belief.
This book invites those curious about their own spiritual paths to reflect deeply on the intersections of faith, culture, and personal transformation.

Horrible, nothing but hypocrisy the whole way through. I'd rather read a phone book from the 80s in reverse.
Excellent book What more to say!!! Get it!!!
It's reading cnn ,God awful
His credibility adds to the distaste of this bill ok. He’s in it for the money and fame only, imho.
Thought provoking. The insight into the human condition is wonderfully written in the first few paragraphs. It grabbed me from the beginning.
I miss Don Lemon's evening show, the most important coverage during 2020 events, and his previous book THIS IS THE FIRE really made me think. I ONCE WAS LOST is about his evangelical christian upbringing. People need to read this book before commenting. It's about kindness, moderation, love, patriotism, and a healthier way forward for America.
This book was written well and is a complete waste of time to read.
I love this book. It really reinforces my belief in God and Jesus. It makes God be the God of Love and thank you Don Lemon.
