“I have read no book that more carefully, thoroughly, and tenderly displays Christ’s heart.” —Paul David Tripp, President, Paul Tripp Ministries; author, New Morning Mercies and My Heart Cries Out Christians know what Jesus Christ has done—but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is “gentle and lowly in heart.” This book reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.
In a world where grace often feels elusive, Gentle and Lowly extends an invitation to discover a depth of compassion found in the heart of Jesus. This compelling exploration uncovers the underlying nature of Jesus' love, revealing a Savior that embodies grace and tenderness. Through profound reflections, the book draws readers closer to understanding the gentle heart of Christ as He reaches out to those burdened by sin and suffering.

Depiction of God’s sweet heart. Brought me immense amount of comfort. Book emphasizes several key points by re-interating in different ways.
Good biblical references to support the gentleness and mercy of God and Jesus as they love us. Adds new dimension to attributes. Considering using the study guide to lead group at church.
Everything about this book draws me. From its canvas-like texture to its muted and earthy tones portraying the most tender of pastoral scenes. From its bold words on the cover, “Gentle and Lowly” to the title of every chapter. As if God whispered the things my heart needed to know to the author, the designer and the artists involved. Though I know it’s a gift to many, in my hand, it feels personal. Something my best friend wanted to tell me and took great care in preparing. The truth, and the mystery contained herein were meant for me. My soul. And I can hardly wait to drink it in. 6/20/23 So I got to pick it up today, as I’ve been looking so forward to doing! I could barely read it through my constant tears that multiple times turned into uncontrollable laughter. It’s like Dane Ortlund is putting words to everything I knew to be true, everything I sensed to be true! Everything I hoped would be true! I think I just deeply needed to read this at this very moment. One of the reviews says “I was persuaded, and I look forward to being persuaded again and again.” That is how I feel! I can think of times, at least in the past year and probably before that, where I’ve heard ideas like this or thoughts like this, and have felt like parched ground under the slightest of rain. I have latched onto those ideas and held them close to my heart. And now I feel like they’re being dumped over my head and I’m being drenched in the truth of Jesus’s kind, compassionate, open hearted love for me from the very core of who he is. Everything inside of me is saying. “Yes! I knew it!”
I personally think this is one of the best books around. I don’t always read a lot of books, because I prefer to just read the Bible. In fact. I rarely recommend books, but recommend this one. It is laden with Gospel Truth, explained in a way that satisfies skeptics who may struggle to consider this too heavy in grace teaching, but is backed in Scripture, and written in a way it’s easily understood by anyone how much God loves us and how incredible Christ is. It makes me want to read it again and again just to be reminded of the beauty of Christ.
Such an amazing take on the heart of Christ, made me cry a lot of times. He is indeed a beautiful God.
Wow, what an amazing book dedicated to the heart of Jesus. I read this throughout the month of June and each time I picked it up, I grew in faith in the Lord. I was encouraged, reminded, comforted and sometimes convicted. Make sure you check out the YouTube Live Shows on Krista's Channel, BooksAndJams for more in depth discussions! I am so thankful to have joined some of the live show discussions with her and other lovely ladies this month. My channel name is BookLoverAmanda. This book dives deep into the heart of Christ and how he views us. He is gentle and lowly in heart. This book beautifully explains this in each chapter and provides some great historical background from the Puritans. What I was reminded of: • We often minimize our sin, we don’t have a good understanding of it because we have a sinful nature. God shows us His ultimate grace and Christ’s heart is drawn to us. Romans 5:20 “Where sin increased, Grace abounded all the more.” • Christ intercedes for us and he will never cast out. • He is an advocate for us. I resonated with this so much because my son has Autism and I have been struggling this past year and found myself sitting in my feelings many days. I can remember specifically one week where I had been so overwhelmed and not praying as I should. I cried out to the Lord one night, praying for my son to have good days at school and to help him grow in his speech and skills. The very next day, he had the best day he had in weeks and the chapter on Jesus being our advocate reminded me that just like I am advocating for my son in his struggles, with therapy and preschool, Jesus is advocating for me, my husband and my son all along the journey. • Jesus is our friend, he is near to us and we should draw near to him. • Jesus understands our feelings and has compassion for us. In our grief, he is grieved. He sees what we are going through and is not surprised by anything we are going through or feeling. • We don’t have to do anything (works) to earn his love. I love the comparison of the son trying to do everything to secure his place in the family when he doesn’t have to do anything special – the same for us in our relationship with Jesus. It’s settled and irreversible. • While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. He loves me in my mess – my crazy, busy, working mom life mess. I can’t be everything for everybody and that’s ok. This chapter reminded me that throughout my mess – he is always sustaining me and loving me and listening. Overall, this is a perfect book to help us understand Jesus and His heart for us.
Its a beautiful book that really helps us take a closer look to the amazing, unending, incredible Love of God for his people. Its also help us understand where we come from and how he sees our struggles and understand. Its simply incredibly uplifting and beautiful.
