Jarod K. Anderson's "Something in the Woods Loves You" is a beautifully poetic and deeply personal exploration of how the natural world can bring comfort and healing in our most challenging times. The book beautifully blends nature writing with memoir. Anderson shares his struggles and, more importantly, the strength of nature's ability to transform our lives. One of the things I enjoyed most about the book is how it combines scientific information with deep emotions. Anderson's observations about bats hearing shapes, bees dancing to map their surroundings, and plants "eating" light are fascinating. Through these beautiful encounters, Anderson helps us see the ordinary aspects of nature as genuinely miraculous. This shift in perspective can be healing, and it's amazing how it helped Anderson find joy and light even in his darkest days. It also helped me to make sense of the role nature played in my own healing from chronic pain. Andersons writing is beautiful and relatable, I was especially moved by the chapter on blue heron. Anderson encourages us to pause and appreciate the little things in life, like the beauty of a single mushroom or the quiet strength of plants. It's not just a book about nature; it's about being human and how connecting with nature can bring us a profound sense of peace. It's a reminder that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves. “Something in the Woods Loves You" is a love letter to the natural world and a must read for anyone who believes in the healing power of nature. It's a must read for anyone needing a gentle reminder of the magic all around us. It's a must read for anyone who needs to rediscover their sense of wonder. It's a must read for nature lovers, those who enjoy self-reflection, or anyone who appreciates a beautifully told story. Basically this book is a must read for everyone and it will stay with you long after you finish reading.
For anyone who has ever experienced depression and loves nature, this is an incredible book. Written by someone who truly understands depression and has a deep love and profound understanding of nature. I love his poetry and have equally enjoyed every part of this book. I've already gifted it to friends. Highly recommend.
Anderson writes in such a way that just speaks to some deep part of my being and makes me want to wander into the forest, find a spot to sit, and read his works. So few authors have been inspiring to make me actually write again, but anytime I read Andersons books I get ideas to write my own experiences. Read this book, read his poetry collections, you won’t regret a moment spent in these pages.
Anderson has a gift of writing about a deep search for meaning and hope without being treacly. He evokes the sense of mystery and wonder we can get from nature. It's been a pleasure to read his poems over the years, and this books tells his story more directly, but just as beautifully. This book is a reminder and reflection of the beauty we can find in the natural world, and how experiencing that beauty can help us create meaning in our own lives.
Shout out to The Cryptonaturalist for these four wonderful, affirming, profound, and supportive works of art. Before I knew you had released the most recent book, I knew your poetry. And before I knew your poetry, I knew your wisdom through the quotes you shared on various platforms. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I've been touched by your words and have found comfort within them for quite some time. As a therapist, your work has helped me help others to feel less isolated as well as instill some hope. As someone that has struggled with their own mental health and with finding meaning, you have often provided me with that same ray of hope I try to pass on to others, as well as gently challenged me with the reminder that we are all connected, especially through the natural world around us (and that there is still wonder, joy, and a deep sense of belonging to be found). Thank you, thank you, thank you.
