About This Book

Welcome to the city of Angelthene. We hope you survive. Loren Calla has only ever been ordinary.

As a human struggling to survive in a city that caters to the needs of vampires, werewolves, witches, and other supernatural creatures, she always assumed her life would remain simple, predictable, and as safe as her world would allow. Until she barely escapes abduction at the hands of Darkslayers—supernatural bounty hunters that possess the Sight, a magical tracking ability that allows them to see a person’s aura—and one of her friends is taken in her place. The abductors are demanding a ransom: Loren's life in exchange for her friend's safe return.

Loren will do whatever it takes to get her friend back—even if it means accepting help from Darien Cassel, the leader of the Seven Devils, the most feared Darkslaying circle in the city. Darien specializes in tracking down demons and criminals that are better off dead than alive, so when he takes a job to track down Loren and finds out she is human—and couldn't hurt a fly if her life depended on it—he decides to protect her instead of turn her in for a reward. As much as Loren doesn't want to admit it, Darien is her best and only chance at finding her friend alive, if she can somehow manage to get along with him—and not fall head-over-heels in love with him in the process, which is far easier said than done.

When more women start disappearing, and some of them slowly turn up dead, Loren and Darien's search for answers takes them deep into Angelthene's corrupt underbelly, where they discover a dark secret that threatens to unravel their world. And when tragedy strikes, Loren learns that love can make an ordinary person do extraordinary things. From the author of Dreams of Ice and Iron comes a new fantasy romance perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas, Ilona Andrews, and Cassandra Clare.

𝙾𝚗 𝚜𝚘𝚖𝚎 𝚜𝚕𝚎𝚎𝚙𝚕𝚎𝚜𝚜 𝚗𝚒𝚐𝚑𝚝𝚜, 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚑𝚘𝚛𝚗𝚜 𝚘𝚏 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚒𝚗𝚗𝚎𝚛𝚜 𝚋𝚎𝚌𝚊𝚖𝚎 𝚑𝚊𝚕𝚘𝚜, 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚎𝚝𝚜 𝚏𝚎𝚕𝚝 𝚕𝚒𝚔𝚎 𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚊𝚍𝚒𝚜𝚎.” Dying. Dead. Deceased. Bury me with this book 🫠 Okay, so I had seen this book compared to Crescent City A LOT. And I can see the similar vibes. We have an urban fantasy setting filled with supernatural beings and all the things that go bump in the night. Where the magic-less humans are nothing more than a placeholder at the bottom of the food chain. ANDDD for me, that is where the similarities end. Dare I say- as a whole, I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed Crescent City. ᴄɪᴛʏ ᴏғ ɢᴏᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴏɴsᴛᴇʀs stood out on its own with its authenticity, beautiful character dynamics, and unique magic systems. THIS BOOK WAS CAPTIVATING. The world building and tension was done so well, that this did NOT feel like it was 760 pages long. There were twists and turns around every corner to keep you completely immersed in this world. Not a single time was I correct in my theories (and I’m usually pretty good at that!) The world building was done in such a way that even though there was an immense- and I mean a crazy amount of gears turning, I never once felt lost. Which is something to say in itself about the start of a new series that had SO much going on. ᴄɪᴛʏ ᴏғ ɢᴏᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴏɴsᴛᴇʀs was definitely a slow burn. But I don’t want to send anyone running the other way by saying that. Because this was dual-pov between our two main leads and let me tell you THE TENSION WAS THERE. All the glorious tension you could ask for. That’s all I’m going to say. I went into this one relatively blind, aside from the comparison to CC and I think you should too 😎 All-in-all. This was a fantastic beginning to a new series, that I feel will definitely wind up being one of my favorites! P.S. Don’t forget to bury me with this book.

I was able to push through to the end of the book and I’d describe it as mediocre overall. It was engaging enough to get through but not good enough that I’d want to continue the series. (SPOILERS) Pros: - Interesting plot that had twists and turns - Good world building, it was easy to keep up with lore and visualizing the setting - Plenty of side characters that add well to the story Cons: - Loren is annoying, every chapter she’s crying about something and getting bad at Darien for the dumbest things. For example when her dog was killed by demons it’s somehow Darien’s fault for not getting to her on time?? When she never called until last minute in the first place?? What’s even worse was that he traded years off his life to bring it back because he felt responsible. - On the topic of annoying characters Darien is Loren’s doormat and has no self respect. Loren could tell him to lick a toilet bowl and he’d do it no questions asked. - The whole trope of the MMC being ran through but randomly deciding to see women as human beings when he meets the pure virgin FMC is cringe. - Most of the flirting and smut in this book is cringe.

I started reading without any expectations as I did not know the author and in fact stumbled upon this book by chance. The good stuff: 1. Good plot that keeps you guessing and on your toes curious. What is the h? Does she or doesn’t she have any powers? And the whole relationship with the H which is very slow burn but intense. 2. Variety of secondary characters and even “guest appearances” of characters which were developed and described. 3. Great world building!! Really, it’s always tricky and some authors are phenomenal (Ilona Andrews) and sometimes there are these that don’t manage it. In this book it was very good and interesting. 4. I felt the book was relatively long, which was delicious because when it’s good, you want it to last! 😄 The “not so great” stuff: 1. I felt the h was not “stable” in the plot. She was either very pulled together and realistic and suddenly came across as juvenile in her reactions. The same with the H, very alpha, and competent and suddenly vulnerable like a 15 year old… these “swings” felt like I am reading a good adult book and the next page it swings to a YA characters, which to begin with has a relatively young h (attending university), so I found it a bit exhausting. 2. Yes, she blushed, her face heated, she turned red / scarlet, rosy etc. It seems there isn’t a chapter in which the h didn’t change colour due to embarrassment from the H. The problem is (in addition to the conduct being repetitive), that the words used to describe this were constantly repeated. All in all an enjoyable read which I had trouble putting down. Totally recommended !

I can't believe this series isn't more well known. I just finished book 3 so coming back to book one to add review. The books are so well written. The dialogue and banter is perfect and real. Just really well done. And the characters! I love, love Darian! And the banter with his familiar is so fun! The plot is intriguing and keeps moving forward while the characters and their lives continue developing. The books are long, but there's no skipping pages. The books are from multiple POV and more characters POV are developed in each book with two primary MC. There is lots romance and spice. Its a slow burn in book 1. The spice is perfectly written and I don't think overdone at all. But I do like spice with a good plot. Have some tissues as each book has some heavy emotions. Each book ends on a cliff hanger so beware. I'm on pins and needles for book 4.
