A brand new YA standalone survivor romance from Jennifer Hartmann, the fan-favorite author of Still Beating , Lotus , and June First, packed with the same light-in-the-dark hope for healing in the face of tragedy. Perfect for fans of If He Had Been With Me , A Thousand Boy Kisses , and Binding 13 . "Kissing you feels like catching the sun…" At seven years old, Ella Sunbury and Max Manning were inseparable—until life scattered them in different directions, forcing Ella to abruptly leave town.

Reeling from the fallout and shunned by her peers, all Ella wants is to fade into the background. Max has little room for distractions, juggling responsibilities for a disabled father and a distant twin brother. But Ella's return reignites something within him.
He wants to be close to her again, to understand her…and to turn their friendship into more. But as their relationship blossoms, new tragedy strikes, and darkness threatens to tip their delicate balance. In order to find the light, they'll have to navigate the shadows.

This book consumed my soul! It was heavy, raw, and heartbreaking. It was very unexpected in just how much it would destroy my heart. I was captivated by Max and Ella's story of love and redemption. This was a highly emotional and angsty story that deserves all the praise! Max is seriously one of the best characters I have ever met. He was so thoughtful and considerate. He was also so truly pure and genuine. I don't think I have wanted a character to be real as much as I wish Max was. He was absolutely perfect! Ella was such a sweet girl and wise beyond her years. She was put through unimaginable horrors and understandably had some trouble coming to grips with it all. I liked that even after all she had been through her friendship with Brynn was still so wholesome and rewarding. Brynn and her family were great characters too and I loved all the scenes with them. I thought I had things figured out then there were major twists and unexpected outcomes that I never saw coming. It kept me on the edge of my seat and glued to the pages. I never wanted to stop reading. My only critique is that the horse scenes were a little inaccurate. A non horse person wouldn't even notice it but as a horse farm manger myself it was pretty obvious. That said I did love the recognition that the horses got and that Ella dream job is the same as mine. That was pretty cool! Overall this is a spectacularly written story of young love and overcoming insurmountable odds. It broke my heart to bits before slowly piecing it back together. I would very highly recommend it!
All the stars for this one!!! Jennifer knocked it out of the park with this story. I love Max and Ella’s journey to HEA. These two go on one heck of a heartbreaking, gut wrenching, beautiful, emotional journey that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Pretty much plan on reading in one sitting. Bring tissues, snacks and drinks to your reading spot! You will cry. You will laugh. You will swoon. You will fall in love with Max and Ella and I promise, you will be cheering for them to make it! The character development is phenomenal, the story is amazing and the writing is incredible. While the characters start off as teens I will say I do not agree that this is YA and for 16 years old and up. This book deals with heavy topics and is open door so please be aware of that and check the TW. I would definitely say this is NA romance not YA.
♾️/⭐️ I can honestly say that after reading a handful of Jennifer Hartmann’s books, she is hands down my all-time favorite author … and this book sealed that for me. Chasing The Sun is my favorite read of 2024 (calling it now!) and probably my new overall favorite book ever!! Chasing The Sun is signature Jennifer Hartmann writing style that is always so fluid and beautiful, and in this case colorful, that she instantly sucks you in and will break you more than once. It was hard to put this book down as I needed to know what happens next. This book does not get the attention it so very much deserves. Ella and Max’s story is unlike any experience I’ve ever read before and thankfully, in the very end, you are put back together. In their story, both Ella and Max overcome their own tragedies and trauma. I loved Ella’s personality and she truly was a strong character. I felt so proud of her in the final few chapters and was happy how things ended up for her. Max is an absolute sweetheart and was always there for Ella, no matter what and no matter how long it took. He is the epitome of a book boyfriend! I always enjoy how Jennifer includes the playlists and music, often focusing on a certain song or musician, in her books. I’ve come across new music this way and will search the playlist on Spotify. Also in this book she uses lots of color, for reference and descriptive, right from the beginning. While I noticed almost right away, I’d love to do a re-read to see how that adds to certain moods or feelings of the characters. Also the use of other classic books and quotes (this one being Winnie the Pooh and poem from TS Eliot) are meaningful additions to the story. And how Max highlights quotes in books for her to find is adorable!! I very much enjoyed this book and would recommend, so long as you are good with the trigger warnings as well as having your heart ripped out more than once. 🧡💛☀️
