About This Book

The Milepost is the best-selling travel guide to Alaska and a "quintessential reference" for northern travelers. The Milepost includes mile-by-mile descriptions of more than 15,000 miles of road in Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, British Columbia and Alberta. Its 700-plus pages detail accommodations, camping, fishing, gas stops, restaurants, attractions and services found along the highways and byways of Alaska and western Canada.

The guide's Travel Planning section answers frequently-asked questions about travel in the North, including what you need to know about crossing the international border, traveling with pets, the Alaska ferry system, driving conditions, railroads, tours and wildlife. Suggested itineraries are mapped out to help travelers plan their trips. The 2024 edition of The Milepost ® is the 76th edition of this classic annual travel guide, which was first published in 1949 as a 72-page guide to the recently opened Alaska ("Alcan") Highway.

While the log of the Alaska Highway is still the foundation of this guide, it has been joined by dozens of connecting routes as well as newer roads, such as the Dalton Highway and the Dempster Highway. All highway logs, which are updated every year by field editors, include a look at the history of the route and often the natural history of the region. The Alaska Highway section includes a brief history of the Alaska Highway that is a poignant reminder of the scale of this project.

The Alaska Highway was named an International Historical Engineering landmark in 1996. The Milepost ® has more than 100 city and highway maps; the wildly popular Plan-A-Trip Map; more than 500 photos; and numerous sidebar features of special interest. Print book buyers have free access to a digital edition.

Lots of information you might not know already

I'm planning on driving to Skagway, Alaska later this summer on the Alaka Highway. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about that. They are interesting but most of them cover the same highlights. Google Maps can help, but can't tell you why you might prefer a different route than it first suggests. This guide shows three different routes to Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Mile 0 of the highway. I knew about the East route, but the Cental and West were new to me. Given where I want to go, I'm now convinced that the Central is the best for what I want to do. On the Alaska Highway itself, there's a lot of useful information. The notes about campgrounds in national and provincial parks are very helpful for planning. During the actual driving, I'll keep this handy for finding fueling points (and where to find the best cinnamon buns). Skagway is not on the Alaska Highway, but this guide shows how to get there anyway. I see that the route passes the World's Smallest Desert. I knew about the desert before but not that I was going to pass so close to it. Good to know!

Super book!

We used this book to help plan our route during our recent road trip to Alaska. It had great ideas of stops along the way and gave us peace of mind to know about bathrooms and gas stations. On our way home, we unexpectedly were detoured due to wildfires and had a long drive without any data. This book was an absolute life saver and helped us feel much more comfortable about the drive, especially while driving at night. This is a must buy if you are headed to Alaska.

A “must have” for camping or RVing in Alaska 🏕️

I bought this for trip planning for our Alaska trip in August. It has extremely detailed info which is what I was looking for. I have travel guides also but we are renting an RV and this tells you where the gas stations are, where emergency services are, what areas of the highways to watch out for moose (to avoid accidents), where each and every turnout is, every campground and whether the campground roads are paved or gravel and whether they have showers, toilets, fire pits, etc. If you aren’t camping or renting an RV, this may be way too detailed for you but I am really happy I bought it, even though it was pricey. They update this every year so the info is the most up-to-date. You will want the travel guides for sightseeing info and Trip Advisor is great for hotel, restaurant and tour recommendations but this is the guide to have if you are driving.

A MUST if driving to Western Canada and AK

Weve used this on all our FL to AK trips, over the last 34 yrs. Buying a new one each time as they update it well. It covers all the Western routes to AK hwy and more. Updates the road conditions and literally, describes every mile. So you know what those mountains are called, that burned area was from a wildfire in 1998, that gas station that you desperately need is only 40 miles ahead. It warns that this area has frequet caribou in road, that the interseacting hwy is confusing, what they strange old tank thing used to be, and on and on, literally, every mile decribed to a tee! Driving to AK is not for the comfort seeker....few hotels and really few bathrooms, enough gas stations but you better get it when you can. But with this book you save yourself much stress, learn so much about what you see that your trip is enhanced 100 times over just winging it! Need a campsite, its covered! Wondering how many people actually live in Chicken, AK? Its covered! Are you driving thru a native reservation? You will know. Trust me, dont even try driving US to Ak without this book!

We have been to Alaska 4 times, renting an RV out of Anchorage. We have taken the MILEPOST with us every single time for guidance on where to get gas, rest stops, photographic opporunites, and frost heave locations or construction. It is updated every year, and there is ALWAYS new information to help you on your journey through the great big beautiful state of Alaska. We would not travel the roads up there without it. All the highways in Alaska are marked mile marker by milemarker....where to possibly see moose and bears, where pullouts are for free overnight camping, and even history tidbits and beautiful photos. It is an AMAZING resource and worth saving after your trip for memories. It's THAT good!

Thorough and user-friendly. Indispensable for a drive to Alaska
