About This Book

THE PAST AND FUTURE COLLIDE IN THIS GRIPPING NEW ADDITION TO THE BELOVED NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING LONGMIRE SERIES It's the summer of 1964, and recent college graduates Walt Longmire and Henry Standing Bear read the writing on the wall and enlist to serve in the Vietnam War. As they catch a few final waves in California before reporting for duty, a sudden storm assaults the shores and capsizes a nearby cargo boat. Walt and Henry jump to action, but it's soon revealed by the police who greet them ashore that the sunken boat carried valuable contraband from underground sources.

The boys, in their early twenties and in the peak of their physical prowess from playing college football for the last four years, head out on Route 66. The question, of course, is how far they will get before the consequences of their actions catch up to them--the answer being, not very. Back in the present day, Walt is forced to speak before a judge following the fatal events of The Longmire Defense.

With powerful enemies lurking behind the scenes, the sheriff of Absaroka County must consider his options if he wishes to finish the fight he started. Going back and forth between 1964 and the present day, Craig Johnson brings us a propulsive dual timeline as Walt Longmire stands between the crossfire of good and evil, law and anarchy, and compassion and cruelty at two pivotal stages in his life.

I would have no problem if this entire book took place in 1964. That part of the book was intriguing and grabbed me from the beginning. The other part of the book, the courtroom drama, was a little boring. I might have liked it had I remembered what happened in book 19. I should have re-read that book first, but didn't know. Usually, when a book spans 2 different time frames, there is some connection between the 2 times. Maybe there was a connection, and I just didn't catch it. Anyway, Walt and Henry's characters differ very little between 1964 and present day. And you get to catch a glimpse of Vic, Dog, and the rest, so that part is good..

Not as good as the first 19. A bit disjointed.

I've been a Longmire fan since Johnson's first book so I eagerly await his next book. It usually takes me two days, max, to read one of these fast-paced, perfectly-balanced-between-plot-and-characters books. Took more than a week to drag myself through this one. I get where Johnson's coming from, addressing historical events as he often does in some way. This book, however, became disjointed and confusing with so many "mysterious" characters, some of whom you never learn the truth about, and jumping from past to present and back, etc. I will say Johnson perhaps did a nice job of setting up his next book...I think. I guess I'll find out if I'm right when the next book is released.

I finished this book nearly a week ago, and as usually happens when I read a book in the Longmire series, I'm still missing the characters. One of the aspects of Craig Johnson's writing that I admire is his ability to know his characters--what they would do in a given situation, what they wouldn't do--and to be consistent throughout all the books in the series. To that end, this book doesn't disappoint, even though we are taken back to the 1960's to get some background on Walt Longmire's early life. Of course Walt and Henry end up having quite an adventure (which I love) in a somewhat deserted town, and there are the requisite battles with villains and mysterious characters and ne'er-do-wells who need to be set straight. But sifted in carefully with all that is a bit of history that, at this point in time, tends to get overlooked: The WWII Japanese "internment" camps. Thank you once again, Craig Johnson, for using your platform to make us just a bit more aware and perhaps--I hope--a bit more sensitive without hitting us over the head with it. I love these books both for their subtlety and for their audaciousness.

I found the story completely engaging and, once again, something quite new from the other Longmire books. Craig Johnson's writing continues to be crisp, dynamic, and well crafted. And clearly, there is much more to come that he is already cooking up in his (quasi-)imaginary world of Durant, WY, located in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains of Absaroka County. (I keep expecting Walt to run into Craig at the Busy Bee.). I'm giving it 4.6/5. (The Cold Dish, Hell is Empty, and The Western Star are his absolutely best works--all 5/5s--in my opinion.)

A good read, but not his best

Craig is a good storyteller, and this was an interesting and complex story. The flashing back and forth between 1964 and "now" was OK, but it does question when "now" is, because doing the math means that Walt would be 78 if "now" was 2020, which with the accumulated beating that he has taken makes him an almost unbelievable tough OLD buzzard. Fortunately a much younger Vic keeps him going. I know she makes me laugh, like when she tells the prosecutor off ! The O. Henry (surprise twist) ending was clever, but the way the yakuza and frozen-in-time horror town and boat drugs and bodies in the desert and everything came together were a bit over the top for me. Also, the choice of the internments camps was unusual for all that 1964 might have meant; as was said by one character: those were different times (after Pearl Harbor). Anyway, Walt, "you're too big to surf" !!
