I can't tell you how much I love these guys. They write the best books. This series is always so exciting. I can't believe they come up with such new stuff. Read this book and have a good time.
Fast paced, exceedingly well researched as always, and quite worth the wait from the first half prologue. It required 2 six hours sittings to complete and was not a chore for a single minute.
I hate reading spoilers in reviews. This is now one of my favorite books from my favorite author duo. Cabinet of Curiosities is my second favorite. Relic is my first. I have been reading these authors with enthusiasm for two decades, not because of stubbornness or loyalty alone, but because they tell an intelligent and vibrant story every time. This one doesn’t disappoint. You don’t have to have read the many preceding books to enjoy it, but if you have, you’ll deeply appreciate it.
I’m a diehard Pendergast fan but admit to being worried how this book would play out given the reappearance of Diogenes (who I’d hope I’d seen the last of earlier in the series). I should have known that Preston & Child would have things well in hand. Not only did Diogenes add to the uniqueness of the storyline, but I found myself cheering him on more than once. I can’t believe I actually ENJOYED his inclusion in this book. Leng is a diabolical adversary, a Pendergast ancestor of pure evil. While Pendergast, Diogenes, and Constance Greene launch separate attacks to take him down, D’Agosta has a parallel plot thread that sees him acting as the protector of Constance’s brother, Joe. With so much going on, the story moves at a blistering pace. Each character has multiple moments to shine in an ongoing chess match of wits. Pendergast is ever resourceful, and I really loved how Constance ruled each scene she was in. This story could have easily gone off the rails, given the “portal” the authors introduced earlier in the series, but I found it an entertaining and well-written read. The attention to detail in the 1880’s setting was so strong I felt as if I was there—walking streets lined by gaslights, inhaling dank, coal-scented air or riding in a horse-driven carriage. Throughout, I wondered how things would wrap up but found the ending wholly satisfying. A resounding five stars. This is one of my favorite novels in the series.
Longtime Pendergast fan here. Literally couldn't put this one down. Satisfying conclusion to the latest trilogy. Writing was on par with some of the earlier novels. Thank you for the great read, guys!
Ok book, but slow and confusing. Hard to make any sense of what was happening at times. Not as good as all the other Pendergast books I have read.
I’d grown a bit tired of this series but decided to try this next episode. I’m glad I did; it was a riveting story and a hell of a ride. I was a little confused by the characters from time to time (no spoilers-if you read it you’ll understand). Another great book by two excellent authors.
A great end to the trilogy. I liked how diogenes story ended it was very clever and cool. All together a fun read.
