A political book for non-political people from viral TikTok sensation PoliticsGirl. Something's gone wrong in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. We can all feel it, but if we're being honest, most of us don't understand it.
At the end of the day, we don't have all the facts, and if you don't know how something works, how do you fix it? A Return to Common Sense is a concise, no-nonsense, dare we say fun, guide to how America works and a roadmap to reclaiming a government of, by, and for the people. If we truly want to be a land of freedom and opportunity where everyone has a shot at a good life, we must acknowledge the ideals of America are in danger, but worth saving.
We fought a revolutionary war for the idea of self-governance and pursuit of happiness--we can't just give up on it now. To address the crisis, Leigh McGowan offers Six American Principles. Six ideals, rooted in history, that we can all agree make America, America.
1. America is a land of freedom. 2.
Everyone should have the opportunity to rise. 3. Every citizen should have a vote, and that vote should count.
4. Representatives should represent the people who elected them. 5.
The law applies to all of us. 6. Government should be a force for good.
Using the Six Principles as guideposts, this book will lay out suggestions for America, to not only find its way out of the mess it's currently in, but to set a course for a future of which we can all be truly proud. It's time to find the courage to step out of our comfort zones and off our team benches to reboot America. If we start here, we start strong.
We can fix this, but the way forward starts with understanding.
In a world increasingly dominated by polarization and misinformation, finding sound solutions to steer America towards a path of prosperity and unity has never been more crucial. "A Return to Common Sense: How to Fix America Before We Really Blow It" is a powerful exploration of the nation's challenges, offering pragmatic and effective strategies for meaningful change. With a blend of historical insight and modern-day observation, the book aims to shed light on the urgent issues that threaten America's future, while equipping readers with a renewed sense of hope and actionable steps toward a more equitable society.

The book paints a clear picture of the political and social issues that have led America to its current state of affairs. By examining historical context and tracing the evolution of certain policies it highlights where we went wrong and what needs to be addressed urgently. A key focus of the book is the power of constructive dialogue and understanding in bridging divides.
It encourages readers to step outside their echo chambers and engage in meaningful conversations that challenge existing biases offering practical techniques to facilitate this exchange. With a call for revisiting foundational principles that have worked in America's favor historically the book stresses the importance of reforming the system by revitalizing values rooted in compromise and mutual respect. It advocates for the vital role of active citizenship in driving political and social reform.

"Common sense is not so common." -- Voltaire This should be must reading for anyone interested in politics or, for that matter, maybe more so for those who claim to be uninterested in politics. As the author notes, whether we're paying attention or not, politics affects us. I'm not going to try to summarize the author's points but will point you to the blurb and countless lengthy reviews that have already been posted. I first encountered McGowan online where she's known as Politics Girl. Her straight-forward, no nonsense comments appealed to me, so when I stumbled across her book to review, I grabbed it. I was not disappointed. McGowan writes in such a way that you'd swear you're sitting in the room with her having a conversation. The conversational tone makes it easy to follow as she details, first, basically how our government was formed and what falls under the various branches of government (among other things), before offering possible suggestions on how to fix it. She recognizes that the first step in solving a problem is recognizing that there is a problem. Ever political decision made impacts us. There were many standout moments in the book but for brevity's sake, I'll only mention a few. First, a reminder that the framers of the Constitution saw it as a living document, a work always in progress, so to speak. In the grand scheme of things, only a handful of people make decisions that will have an impact on our lives so we need to be more attentive to who we select to make up that small, core group. Something is broken and ignoring it isn't going to fix it. The other thing that gave me pause was her suggestion for how to make the Supreme Court more effective and fair. Nope, I'm not going to share how. Read the book. Grin. And, finally, her reminder that freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from accountability. That is something many seem to forget or ignore. Seriously, this book should be required reading. It's a relatively quick, easy read, too, despite the importance of what it covers. The book opens with what might be dubbed a mini-refresher course of our high school civics class (do they even still have civics classes?) and then into how we've strayed from the ideals of our nation's founders and how we can find our way back. My sincere thanks to #AtriaBooks for allowing me this early look. As Benjamin Franklin once said, "Common sense if something that everyone needs, few have, and none think they lack." McGowan's book will go a long way toward helping us find our way.
A jaw dropping lesson in history with real information and insight into the issues we currently face as a nation. Leigh is a delight to read, even if the topic is deadly serious. All true Americans, that love our democracy, need to read this and take the lessons seriously.
