Stephen and Evie Colbert invite you to pull up a chair as they share their favorite recipes from family and friends and offer a glimpse of food and fun in their South Carolina home. “Hopefully reading this book and cooking these recipes will feel like hanging out with us at home. We basically live in the kitchen anyway.” ―Evie and Stephen Colbert As Evie and Stephen explain it, Does This Taste Funny?
had its beginnings in the Covid lockdown. “We were all stuck together and couldn’t go out, so we cooked. We had all three kids back under one roof for the first time in a long time, and we had dinner each night as a family.
Cooking together became a major source of entertainment.” Now, the Colberts invite us into their kitchen and around their dining room table. Sharing Stephen and Evie’s favorite recipes, as well as those of their family and friends, this book offers everything from Party Food (called “party food” because “appetizers” implies something to follow when we all know that, often, this is the only course), to Seafood, to Poultry and Meat (“Evie and I have different relationships to meat. I like it.
Evie can take it or leave it, and mostly she leaves it.”), to Desserts (“This is one of the largest sections of the book. Evie always reminds me that desserts are a great way to postpone clearing up.”), to Drinks (“I love cocktail hour. It feels like a reward for having gone so long without a cocktail”), all tied together with playful dialogue between Stephen and Evie and gorgeous shots of their food, family, and home.

I just received my copy yesterday - haven't made anything yet but have several picked out to try. Just reading through the book is a joy - wonderful stories and fun photos. Thank you, Evie and Stephen.
I love that they included the little details like which brands were favorites for recipes and how to set up the oven racks for success. Those are little things that a lot of cookbooks leave out. You can they wanted the reader to get the same result at home. This book seems to be a labor of love to document their family recipes before the traditions were lost. It comes from the heart.
I ordered this in March. It was delivered today. I opened it and laughed and teared up before I got to the first “receipt”. We will make cheese biscuits and give them to our neighbors (even those with the wrong yard signs🙂). Sadly, someone in our household is allergic to shellfish so I’ll miss some particular low country “receipts”, but even if you don’t cook at all just reading this book will make you happy. (and BTW, Evie, my granny♥️ called ‘em “receipts”)
I had the pleasure of seeing an early copy of this beautiful book and have already made the popovers, the candied hot peppers, the cornflake chicken with mango sauce, the crab cakes, and the sticky toffee pudding! I can honestly say I would make every single one for company. I took the sticky toffee pudding to my Bookclub. The photos are gorgeous and the book is so unique in the way the dialog between members of the Colbert family introduce each recipe (or receipt as Evie likes to say). What a treasure to have in my stack of cookbooks.
This is the worst cookbook I've ever read. Written like a young child, but more manic. This guy has lost it.
Let’s face it, we all have enough cookbooks. I was charmed when I saw Stephen and Evie on the Colbert show last week cooking lemon pepper shrimp with hominy. I just received the book and love the way that all allows me into Stephen and Evie‘s lives with wonderful pictures and stories. They sure have a nice house. So although the recipes look great, I had primarily hoped the book would be a way I could get to know Stephen and Evie better, and it is.
I love this cookbook. I read it almost from cover to cover. Loved the stories/commentary. Thought it was great that friends and family’s recipes were included. The photography was beautiful - loved it that there’s a picture for almost every recipe. I liked that most recipes are not a ton of ingredients, and if there’s something hard to find they give alternatives. (I always wonder about the tail on thing too - why?!). I have a lot of cookbooks - a lot. This book goes way to the top! Look forward to making many of these recipes/receipts :)
I just got the book; I am an experienced and avid cook and a dedicated viewer of Stephen Colbert through the "ages," and I always enjoy it when Evie is on the show with him. I had no idea they were such dedicated and knowledgeable cooks, but it jumped right out at me when I glanced through their chosen recipes and found they are important ones many of us love and are lovingly presented. I sat and read as if it were a novel of interest because the comments by the authors and the recipes themselves made me feel like part of the family. Some of the recipes seem easy and fast, and some are quite elaborate and showy. But all of them, accompanied by the author's notes and disclosures, make reading the book an event. I will give this book as a gift to deserving and loved friends. Thank you Stephen and Evie. And I am a prize-winning photographer; I LOVE the photos.
