About This Book

You've heard from autistic authors. You've heard from therapists. Now hear from one extraordinary young woman who's both.

Experience autism from the inside out through a rare fusion of professional skill and personal understanding. Reshape what you know about the autism spectrum and increase your ability to give support. Varied perspectives among autistic individuals, their families, and professionals have often been difficult to reconcile.

Now, you can bridge that divide with guidance from someone who’s lived in multiple worlds. Find immediate, actionable options to build connections, foster communication, navigate challenges, and enhance interactions. SPECIFIC CONTENT: Part One, AUTISM BASICS, focuses on the definition of autism, what autism is not, and an overview of implications across the spectrum of neurodivergence.

Part Two, COMMUNICATION, discusses effective communication with autistic people, reducing ambiguity, increasing specific content, parent tools for encouraging conversation, relying on verbs, how “Plain Language” helps, when to wait instead of speaking, and the overlooked power of writing to support verbal interaction. Part Three, BEHAVIOR, talks about the logistics of meltdowns and how to handle, cause and effects of stimming and perseveration; recognizing the basis of sensory distortion; outside help and self-advocacy for sensory seekers and sensory avoiders;, Theory of Mind and autistic people’s ability to “read rooms”; reconsidering the value of special interests; all or nothing perspective of “big feelings”; why eye contact can be hard and how to cope; and masking. Part Four, INTERACTIONS, features the truth and implications of loneliness; innate versus learned social skills; the hidden rules causing social complications; encouraging independence; challenges with executive function; a collaborative approach to goal setting; and understanding disability accommodations.

Part Five, COMMON QUESTIONS, addresses the practical reality of DSM-5’s “Diagnostic Levels”; the why and how of therapy for autism; the value of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA); and routes to autism advocacy. Kaelynn's ability to break down complex concepts into easily understandable and actionable steps related to life with autism is truly a gift. Because she both lives as someone with autism and supports those with autism, she offers a breadth of perspective that does allow her to be that "bridge" of perspective for those seeking to better understand the perspective of people with autism.

Disclaimer: I've just ordered this book, as have many others. Will update this preview into a full fledge review once I'm done reading it. I am looking forward to learning what author Miss Partlow has to share! If you're anything like me, a "neurotypical" person who discovered Kaelynn along with some amazing other people on the Netflix hit "Love on the Spectrum", I have to admit I was pretty ignorant on the topic. Frankly, autism wasn't something I thought about much because I hadn't been exposed to people who outwardly displayed characteristics of it. (Much less would I even recognize the signs.) But I've always felt "different" myself (but I don't think autistic, nor have I ever been diagnosed as such) and I've often wondered if I have ADHD, but that's neither here nor there. So discovering how people with autism are living, thriving and inspiring others touched a part of me in that show. And I'm sure many others as well. So of course I started following her and a few others on social media. And I've learned so much. Kaelynn seems to be a patient, caring and very relatable advocate. Of course, this is because she is a therapist as well so she understands how to relay information clearly and cleverly. While seemingly simple on the surface, the lessons and stories she shares resonate deeply and are applicable whether one is autistic or not. I'm sure there'll be much more to learn in her first book. So I'm excited to become a better, more understanding person because of her. Thank you, Kaelynn, for sharing your world with the rest of the world around you.

Great insite, many tools and easy read
