Of all the 1st grade workbooks we have, this is probably the most basic. There is nice use of color and pictures to make it more fun to a small child and the font is large and not intimidating. The first 160 pages are all language. It starts with writing single letters to put at the beggining of each word that makes the word match its picture, then has the child sort words based in if it has soft and hard sounds for certain letters such as g and c. Then end a word correctly with b or d, m or n, t or p, ll or l, and ss or s. It has your child identify short vs long vowel sounds. Then it's fill in the blank in the sentence with the correct word from the box for many many pages. On page 112, we start writing sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation. Then there are about 8 or 9 very short stories (3 to 6 sentences each) that the kid has to pay attention to to answer basic questions about. Then there is simple sentence writing for 11 or so pages. Then a few pages of looking at related pictures and deciding the correct sequence of the event. There are many pages of simple addition and subtraction, some with pictures but some with numbers. Counting, groups of 10 and number placement, comparing numbers and deciding which is larger, some basic charts, shapes, measuring, very basic time telling, some coin counting, and a few pages of science. Overall, I'd recommend this book but it is very basic so if you want more variety, find another 1st grade book to supplement this one.

I am not being paid to write this review. This book is awesome. It has so many subjects to prepare your child for 1st grade. I will continue to buy Brain Quest books. Love it and my grandson enjoys the lessons in it.

Overall good contents and kid seems to like this. It help encouraging them to read and learn during the summer time. Only thing is that the book may be from a return from someone. Otherwise will be a 5 stars.

I love the book because it has advance grammar and language work for my child. However its colorful and fun so my child does not feel bored or overwhelmed with doing the work.

Although is not part of her school curriculum my little one enjoys coming back from school and so some work on this book, pretty easy to handle for parents and helps a lot! My daughter has improved her skills a lot with this book! I highly recommend this book if your little one is transitioning from kindergarten to 1st grade.

We homeschool and this was a wonderful supplement to our homeschool curriculum. It had SEVERAL different topics of study that my son has very much enjoyed. He also loved the stickers in the back of the book he could put on the front of each unit page when he completed a certain unit of study. This was the perfect option for some "busy work" when I needed him to do some self guided work. We will definitely be purchasing the grade 2 book for next year.
