About This Book

A 2020 Audie finalist - narration by author Famed American actress Demi Moore at last tells her own story in a surprisingly intimate and emotionally charged memoir. For decades, Demi Moore has been synonymous with celebrity. From iconic film roles to high-profile relationships, Moore has never been far from the spotlight - or the headlines.

Even as Demi was becoming the highest paid actress in Hollywood, however, she was always outrunning her past, just one step ahead of the doubts and insecurities that defined her childhood. Throughout her rise to fame and during some of the most pivotal moments of her life, Demi battled addiction, body image issues, and childhood trauma that would follow her for years - all while juggling a skyrocketing career and at times negative public perception. As her success grew, Demi found herself questioning if she belonged in Hollywood, if she was a good mother, a good actress - and, always, if she was simply good enough.

As much as her story is about adversity, it is also about tremendous resilience. In this deeply candid and reflective memoir, Demi pulls back the curtain and opens up about her career and personal life - laying bare her tumultuous relationship with her mother, her marriages, her struggles balancing stardom with raising a family, and her journey toward openheartedness. Inside Out is a story of survival, success, and surrender - a wrenchingly honest portrayal of one woman’s at once ordinary and iconic life.

This book is interesting, entertaining and informative. Told in a captivating narrative that will cause you a giggle or two along the way. I appreciate the straightforward way of Demi's style with words. This book reads fairly fast because it's hard to put down. I can see that Demi Moore is her happiest as a mother and she does it her own way. She has my respect.

It's mediocre

This book was not riveting, but it was interesting enough that I stayed with it. I witnessed all of her celebrity as we are exactly the same age, and I remember feeling sad and surprised when she and Bruce broke up and having many questions about the why ( and I still don't really know why, heard more in the tabloids about his carousing than she mentions). I also remember witnessing her struggle with her body image; between Striptease and G.I. Jane there wasn't much to wonder about. I think this book would have been way more interesting if she had shared more about her interactions with other stars and how they treated her, how they lived, and there were some giants in her heyday. For instance, she mentions Elizabeth Taylor's Sunday lunches (who knew?) and doesn't say anything else about it. All of these celebs live in this special little world, including her, and all they (she) can talk about in regard to it is the bad paparazzi, how good she was in various films, and how she and Bruce would navigate kid's schedules. It's like this big secret. The story of her childhood, while sad, is not earth-shattering, and how her entire life has been a response to that, also nothing new. We watched it unfold as it happened. What would have been interesting is more of the behind the scenes stuff that Hollywood doesn't want you to know; the part involving Joel Schumacher is a good example. She and Bruce came to my hometown and opened up a Planet Hollywood back in the 90's, I think. They brought big stars with them and sold outrageously over-priced tickets to go to the opening. So all of our local celebs and philanthropists bought these tickets thinking they would hobnob with them. Instead they were sent to another downstairs room to "party" while all of the movie stars privately partied upstairs. That's how this book feels. You get to hear about how she suffered, how she feels, what she wants. But there are no interesting details about the privileged life she has lived for the last 30 years. It's just another recovery book and a mediocre one at that.

I'll admit, I watched Demi in movies while I was growing up and I always liked her. But, I really knew nothing about her personal life, reading this changed all that. Her story is far from perfect, but the imperfections make it so relatable. I found myself almost in tears several times because I knew the pain she was feeling at certain times in her life. Whether you're a fan of this beautiful, talented woman or not, this book is definitely worth reading.

This is a quick read you can binge in half a day. It’s concise but packs a lot of trauma, heartbreak and eventual resolution. Lessons learned are hard, yet universal. A very good read.

A FIRST PERSON OPEN NARRATIVE ABOUT SELF-DISCOVERY AND LOVE

“The universe conspires to give you everything you want, but not always in the way you expect it. —Paulo Coelho “Security can come from the inside, from yourself.” —Demi Moore I’m not usually one to read celebrity books, but this one peaked my interest because its written in first person by the author—the woman who lived it. Demi Moore even did her own narration for the audio book. Inside Out is an identifiable story about love and forgiveness—not only for those that hurt us, but for ourselves. Like a lot of celebrities, Demi’s early dysfunctional family primed her for becoming an actress—pretending to be someone she wasn’t, craving attention and love from a world and people she couldn’t trust. She learned to take care of everyone but herself, choosing men like her grandfather and father, mirroring the behavior of the mother she didn’t want to be like, trying to turn herself into a person that would please everyone in her life. She tried to fit into the role life had come to expect of her, feeling like a fraud, believing she wasn’t good enough to earn their true love and respect. Demi Moore’s book is an honest, forthright, interesting open narrative of a perfectionist who discovered the wisdom in imperfection. Its a beautifully written dialogue of a broken human being figuring out who she really was and healing her soul. Its a book about surrendering to a higher power, trusting and becoming who you are. “Taking responsibility for your own reaction is the gateway to freedom.” —Demi Moore, Inside Out “Things happen in life to get our intention—to make us wake up. … I needed all of this to become who I am now. … The truth is, the only way out is in.” —Demi Moore, Inside Out
