#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In her inspiring, intimate memoir, the first Black woman to ever be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States chronicles her extraordinary life story. With this unflinching account, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson invites listeners into her life and world, tracing her family’s ascent from segregation to her confirmation on America’s highest court within the span of one generation. Named “Ketanji Onyika,” meaning “Lovely One,” based on a suggestion from her aunt, a Peace Corps worker stationed in West Africa, Justice Jackson learned from her educator parents to take pride in her heritage since birth.
She describes her resolve as a young girl to honor this legacy and realize her dreams: from hearing stories of her grandparents and parents breaking barriers in the segregated South, to honing her voice in high school as an oratory champion and student body president, to graduating magna cum laude from Harvard, where she performed in musical theater and improv and participated in pivotal student organizations. Here, Justice Jackson pulls back the curtain, marrying the public record of her life with what is less known. She reveals what it takes to advance in the legal profession when most people in power don’t look like you, and to reconcile a demanding career with the joys and sacrifices of marriage and motherhood.
Through trials and triumphs, Justice Jackson’s journey will resonate with dreamers everywhere, especially those who nourish outsized ambitions and refuse to be turned aside. This moving, openhearted tale will spread hope for a more just world, for generations to come.

I was truly disappointed to open the box and find book cover torn.
Seemingly from birth, Justice Jackson had goals that few people ever even dream of. But she is clearly no ordinary woman; she is brilliant, incredibly hard-working, driven, and possessed of a diversity of interests (passions?) that would seem to require an incredibly wide bandwidth. Her memoir is fascinating, and its ending (which we all know, of course) is very gratifying and inspiring. Her upbringing, education, career, family, and her challenges (yes, she’s had them) make for a very good read that held my interest throughout. Her successes along the way, and those challenges, are inspiring. So, a very worthy memoir, indeed. And yet…. I apologize if it seems like carping, but the book seems artificial in some ways. I don’t know what to call it, but the best I can do is to say that it lacks a certain spark. It’s a TV show in which a character faces obstacle but it all seems to end happily ever after, and that’s not only of the book as a whole, but also of individual sections. The best - i.e., most human - parts of the book were those in the second half, in which Justice Jackson had to deal with some bad blows, including her daughter’s autism, when she was frazzled and tested in ways that no parent should be. I could be completely wrong, but I’d like to think that those portions were written by the Justice herself, rather than her “ghost” writer, because they seemed so much more real.
So far so good
I just received this publication and I can’t put it down. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is a highly intelligent woman. I wandered why she would write a book so soon. I find her to be a highly informative and interesting woman, and she shares her life and insights within the covers of this book. I am so glad she took the time to share her life with us. I will continue reading and report back once it’s completed.
What a wonderful book! I am reading this to my friends and 10 of them have purchased the book because it is so very good. We are 60% completed and are enjoying it immensely!
Absolutely AMAZING and INSPIRING!!! Beautifully written.
Very detailed personal account of her personal and professional life So uplifting and inspiring Excellent commentary on how important family values are along with good parenting, education, inclusivity, and opportunity Race is irrelevant but hopefully America will learn that one day Hopefully America and the world will also give women the credit and opportunity they deserve to serve in any capacity they choose Justice Brown Jackson is truly a Lovely One
Ketanji Brown Jackson is a wonderful writer and her story is compelling. Reading her book, I was inspired by her journey, her love of family, and her hard work to achieve her goals. Best of all, I find her presence on our Supreme Court a comfort as our nation deals with discord and divisions. Her humanity and wisdom shine through in every chapter of the book.
