Over the course of his presidency, Donald Trump intimidated, silenced, and bent to his will Justice Department and FBI officials. He sowed public doubt in both agencies so successfully that when he tried to overturn the results of the 2020 election, he paid little political cost and, despite an unprecedented array of criminal indictments, easily won the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election. In Where Tyranny Begins, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Rohde investigates the strategies Trump systematically used to turn the country's two most powerful law-enforcement agencies into his personal political weapons.
Rohde also reveals how, during the Biden years, Justice Department non-partisan 1970s norms that Attorney General Merrick Garland reinforced inadvertently helped Trump, and could fail to deliver a trial and legal accountability by Election Day 2024. Where Tyranny Begins exposes how ill-suited both the DOJ and FBI are to serve as checks on abuses of presidential power. A round of historic reforms equivalent to the post-Watergate reforms that stabilized American democracy in the 1970s are immediately needed.
A five-word warning coined by the English philosopher John Locke in 1689 captures the stakes in 2024: "Where-ever law ends, tyranny begins."
Dive into the intricate, often concealed world of power and control that shapes modern governance in 'Where Tyranny Begins: The Justice Department, the FBI, and the War on Democracy.' This revealing narrative explores the underlying tensions and unspoken intentions between these institutions and how they influence democratic processes. The book navigates through a landscape where power clashes with ethics, presenting a compelling narrative that challenges readers' perceptions of authority and justice.
Understand the complex relationships between government institutions and democracy. Uncover the implications of power misuse on democratic values. Gain insight into the mechanisms that foster authoritarian tendencies.
Where Tyranny Begins dissects the intricate operations within the Justice Department and the FBI revealing how these entities can subtly shift the foundations of democracy. This insightful account delves into their history highlighting moments when the pursuit of justice bordered on authoritarianism. The book paints an alarming picture of how institutional powers can steer national agendas behind closed doors often contradicting public interests.
With meticulous research and engaging narrative readers are taken on a journey through landmark events where these organizations played pivotal roles. By examining case studies the book reveals patterns of behavior that suggest both historical and ongoing challenges to democratic principles. This exploration offers a nuanced view prompting critical reflection on the true nature of freedom and control in a modern democracy.
Through compelling storytelling the author lays bare the fragility of democratic institutions under the influence of powerful agencies. The book alerts citizens to the importance of vigilance and accountability in maintaining democratic health. Readers are encouraged to question and engage with the systems in place fostering a more informed and active citizenry in the face of potential tyranny.
The narrative culminates in an urgent call to action underscoring the necessity for transparency and reform. By understanding past missteps the book advocates for a reinvigoration of democratic practices. It concludes with a hopeful perspective that renewed awareness and concerted efforts can safeguard the liberty and justice that form the cornerstone of democracy.
This book uniquely merges historical analysis with contemporary issues providing a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between power and democracy By detailing past and present events it uncovers patterns influencing today's political landscape. Unlike other political critiques it blends narrative storytelling with factual exposition making complex governmental functions accessible to a broad audience This approach ensures readers are both informed and engaged throughout the exploration of authoritarian tendencies. The author's insightful and balanced perspective offers a compelling argument for the necessity of reform in powerful institutions making a strong case for vigilant citizen involvement This combination of critical analysis and optimism distinguishes it from other political discourse.

Wow, talk about projection, Trump isn’t the one trying to throw his political opponent in jail.
This book rehashes Trump’s interactions with the DOJ and the FBI over the last seven years. It is evident that upholding the norms and ethics that have always made the justice system work fail us when we are dealing with someone who has no respect for norms and ethics. Unfortunately this book offers no new insight or solutions
Convicted FELON runs for president to stay out of prison. MagaTs claim that is patriotism. Read this book- it’s amazing & right on point.
This book illustrates how Donald Trump directly attacked and damaged, (hopefully not irrevocably) our entire justice system through well-planned inexorable prevarications, which infiltrated and polluted our laws and legislation, alongside threats, revenge and intimidation of important and powerful justice department employees.
It's not projection. It's about a malignant narcicist.
Disappointing to see what a country we’ve become. I fault our educational system . Civics and history should be required courses. Critical thinking should also be taught.
