As a wave of murders grips Southern California, an unlikely pair must untangle the mysterious patterns of an elusive killer. A propulsive new series by New York Times bestselling author Jeffery Deaver and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Isabella Maldonado. Carmen Sanchez is a tough Homeland Security agent who plays by the rules.
But when her sister is attacked, revealing a connection to a series of murders across Southern California, she realizes a conventional investigation will not be enough to stop the ruthless perpetrator. With nowhere else to turn, Sanchez enlists the aid of Professor Jake Heron, a brilliant and quirky private security expert who, unlike Sanchez, believes rules are merely suggestions. The two have a troubled past, but he owes her a favor and she’s cashing in.
They team up to catch the assailant, who, mystifyingly, has no discernible motive and fits no classic criminal profile. All they have to go on is a distinctive tattoo and a singular obsession that gives this chillingly efficient tactician his nickname: Spider. Over the next seventy-two hours, Sanchez and Heron find themselves in the midst of a lethal chess match with the killer as they race to stop the carnage.
As the victims mount, so do the risks. Because this spider’s web of intrigue is more sinister—and goes far deeper—than anyone could possibly anticipate.
In the bustling city of Serrano, the unexpected arrival of a chilling message disrupts the daily routine of seasoned detectives Sanchez and Heron. A twisty mystery emerges, pulling them from familiar crime scenes into a world of deception and danger, where nothing is as it seems. As they navigate cryptic clues and murky motives, their ability to trust even those closest to them is put to the ultimate test.
Caught in a tangled web of intrigue, they must unravel the truth before it becomes fatal.
Trust becomes a delicate balance as allies turn uncertain. The city's ordinary facade masks extraordinary secrets and danger. Courage amidst adversity strengthens the bond between partners.
In the heart of Serrano chaos erupts as an unexpected message sends shockwaves through the city. Detectives Sanchez and Heron known for their sharp instincts and partnership are thrust into a case like no other. As they race against time hidden secrets and looming threats become their fierce adversaries.
The dynamic duo's quest for truth delves deep into a labyrinth of lies testing their wits and courage. As chilling revelations unfold every clue uncovered challenges their perceptions and choices.
The bond between Sanchez and Heron is both their strength and vulnerability as new evidence arises Their investigative skills bring them beyond familiar territories where every decision could mean life or death The relentless pursuit of justice immerses them in a high-stakes game against unseen enemies As obstacles mount their unity is tested showing that in the darkest moments true loyalty emerges In a race to unearth the truth their every move draws them closer to danger and resolution.

This book was engaging with great characters and lots of action. However, it makes one seriously consider the safety of usage of electronics . It's too close to reality and is probably happening all around as we read this. The future seems bleak and I'm glad I'm older and be long gone before this gets worse. It's more frightening than horror fiction. Ok..be seeing you off the grid. Well done . 😂
I love when a novel educates me as well as entertains. This one included many interesting IT references and new information (for me) about intrusion (and prevention). The characters were unique with complex backgrounds and personalities. It was tough to put down. I'm starting on the second one NOW. I've read Jeffery Deaver for decades and will be reading Maldonado, who has at least three series, this week! It was exciting and action-packed. Enjoy!
I have been a fan of both writers for a long time. I’ve ready every book each has written. This story, and start of a new series, was an excellent story by 2 powerful writers. The story was riveting and the characters believable and drew me in. Enjoy the ride!,
A slow read through the first few chapters, but the pace picked up tremendously once Jacoby Heron came on scene. The fast-paced action and rapidly spiraling criminal activity made for a good read overall. The ending will leave you cheering! One caveat: I’m not a fan of the f-bombs which occur too often through this story. Although I see where one might think that the word makes the dialogue more realistic, it didn’t in any way serve to further the story.
I felt like I was watching this story in the movies as it was so action-packed. A great read. A fascinating story of how, at times, bending the rules can result in a more thorough review of a case, and, produce better results. Even for those that work in law enforcement and national security and have a gazillion rules to follow! The story is fast-paced and interesting. The characters are believable. I would recommend this book for our book club read. Looking forward to reading Sanchez & Heron Book 2.
collaboration, impossible to tell who wrote what, and I don’t care. This book is just marvelous in every way, complex plot, brilliant writing, every detail perfect. A unique pairing, Carmen Sanchez and Jacoby Heron, that works beautifully. I am in general a bit down on psychopaths, given the number of them we have in our government and who want to be in our government, and have avoided those in this genre, which I do love going all the way back to Agatha Christie. This is a wonderful exception, and I do have given this is labeled as Book 1, that the collaboration between the authors continues as well. I would love more in this series. It’s contemporary, up to the minute on global affairs and the challenges we face from AI with both state and individual actors. Absolutely recommend this without hesitation to anyone. Great read, just loved it, and hated that it ended.
The MCs play to each other's strengths as they uncover layer upon intricate layer of complications and twists. The realities of "intrusions" in every area of our lives are frightening, as this story makes clear. Yet, there is hope in that there are agents (in all senses of the word) working for good. One of the best aspects of this story is the realistic portrayals of those agents struggling with both internal and external mores as they work against bad actors. Great characters, storyline, plot twists, and relationships - highly recommend for anyone who enjoys crime, thriller, mystery, partnership, or realistic drama!
This novel really moves along swiftly, keeping the reader interested in what evolves next. Character development is excellent. The twists on the story are nicely introduced as the story progresses.
