My first historical fiction, a success!

WW2 has always intrigued me so of course i was on board with the setting. if youve ever watched "dont worry darling", the main location reminded me of that, minus the psychological thriller aspect. I was interested to see how this novel could fill 370 worth of pages but i found myself repeating "one more chapter" fairly often. The book was told in third person from the POV of several main characters. It gave domestic drama vibes with a war time overlay and was very enjoyable. How the war changes people and working on atomic matter changed characters was very gripping to read, particularly the lengths they go to shield their secrets and keep people in the dark. . a really great novel.

This book is at least a 6 star read.

Hill of Secrets by Galina Vroman is an excellent blend of both fiction and the wartime Los Alamos reality. Knowing a little about the development of these nuclear warheads didn't include knowledge of the homelife, and Galina's book was, well, an open book. The three year epilogue shows that there could be a continuance of the story, maybe of the men's recovery. I highly recommend this book. It is well-written and flows smoothly.

This ia my favorite kind of historical novel - one that gives a new perspective on an historical event through its effects on "ordinary"people caught up in it. We see life at Los Alamos during the development of the atomic bomb (chillingly referred to only as "the gadget") through the eyes of the main characters, especially the women who accompanied the scientists there. They had to cope with a harsh alien environment and a great deal of mystery wrapped in an enigma right at home. The complexity of their experiences is beautifully rendered and stays with me. When I close a book and keep thinking about it, that's the highest praise I can give any work of literature.

This the first fiction book I have read about Los Alamos, although I am familiar with the research and briefly lived in the area. Nuclear war is such s disconcerting topic; perhaps that is why the characters did not fully resonate with me. The storyline is believable and has enough twists to keep you reading, and the ending was very well written. I would recommend reading this book for the historical insight.

This book took a different approach on WWII describing lives affected by the war and the race the people were in who were employed by our government to produce the atom bomb which finally ended the war. There are many secrets people live with every day, I finished reading and then reflected on these many different secrets which were kept by many different people. In conclusion, my thoughts led me to this question: "Is it possible to actually and truthfully know even one person?"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, was able to become invested in the characters, and it kept my attention. The ending was weak. It was like, a door slammed shut and it was over vs. the story wrapping up.

I really enjoyed this book. It may not have been totally historically accurate or perfect in the geographical sense, but it was a wonderful read that kept me involved. The characterizations are wonderful and the plot has some unexpected twists and turns. I could really relate to the emotions each character was feeling and was sorry when it ended. I wanted to know more about their lives after the bomb dropped.
