About This Book

The New York Times bestselling author of The Diamond Eye and The Rose Code returns with a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era. Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences.

But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship: poised English beauty Fliss, whose facade of perfect wife and mother covers gaping inner wounds; policeman’s daughter Nora, who finds herself entangled with a shadowy gangster; frustrated baseball star Beatrice, whose career has come to an end along with the women’s baseball league of WWII; and poisonous, gung-ho Arlene, who has thrown herself into McCarthy’s Red Scare. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. When a shocking act of violence tears the house apart, the Briar Club women must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst?

Capturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test. Includes a bonus conversation with Kate Quinn, Saskia Maarleveld, and Tessa Woodward, editor of The Briar Club.

I’ve read three other books by this author. I expected this to be about the Mc Carthy era but I really don’t think that aspect was well developed at all. Bits and pieces of each character were interesting but they didn’t grip me or shall I say, the story development just wasn’t ever important to me. No punch. Disappointing

absolutely five stars

This book was such a fun read. Not only do I love the historical fiction aspect, but all of the characters were interesting and relatable. I love how the author weaves their stories together until the final twist.

This story takes place after WWII in a boarding house. The boarders are all women, and the landlady has two children. The author uses chapters to focus on each woman, and we learn her back story. Slowly, the intersecting pieces of relationships begin to fit together. Two murders happen in this house, but it is not until the ending of the story that all comes together. I loved the author’s style of writing, the depth of each character, and the way she unfolded this story. I will be looking for more books by this author.

I’ve read every book written by Kate Quinn and have loved every one! But as much as I have consumed her historical fiction and read them as fast as I could because of their amazing stories I have to say this book “The Briar Club” was beyond 5 stars! I literally devoured this book in 2 days and no pun intended as the book contains many great recipes woven into this amazing story. I can’t give you a synopsis I’m so afraid to give anything away but I can say that you will love this book and the ending is AMAZING! Don’t cheat yourself by reading ahead and absolutely save Quinn’s infamous Author Note (if you are a fan you know what I’m talking about….spoilers to a great novel!” I highly recommend you run, don’t walk to get a copy of this novel, block off a few days and immerse yourself in an absolutely incredible book!

Definitely a book to read. You won’t be able to put it down until the end and even then you want it to go on. Great characters and the plot is really good.

This is a charming book about relationships and a study in that people may not be exactly as they appear, that kindness trumps meanness, and we all deserve forgiveness from time to time. I found it to be easily read, part mystery, part love story of people and of places held dear. Well done, Ms. Quinn.

Very good but little about the McCarthy Era

It was not very fast-paced until about 60% in, but the characters were wonderfully drawn, as was life in Briar House. I had hoped to learn more about the McCarthy era but it was treated very much on the surface. Almost every type of female was depicted and to see them all interact with each other, and with the world was fascinating.

Kate Quinn has hit another one out of the park with her amazing character development, plot twists and feminine friendships all sprinkled with historical perspective. Especially enjoyed the character of Briarwood House.
