I thoroughly enjoyed this latest Will Trent book! The setting was vividly developed. The characters were rich and diverse. The plot was filled with twists and turns. I couldn't put the book down.
She's written a closed door mystery much like the OG, Agatha Christie, but she's clever and she throws that right into the book. And in the end it's not really at all like AND THEN THERE WERE NONE or any of the copycats. It's an original and modern story with all of our favorite characters. The twists just keep coming, and I will continue to read this series because I love Will and Faith, and Sara is still Sara, but she makes Will happy and that makes me happy. I would strongly recommend not starting with this book if you're interested in this series. Go back at least a few. This isn't the one to draw in new readers. It's more of a dessert for those of us who have been reading the series forever.
With Karin Slaughter, you know what you’re getting: the story will be gritty, the details will make you cringe, but the book will be one you can’t put down. Or at least that’s my experience. I’ve read all of her books and love them. You know how sometimes a writer will incorporate new characters, and you’re annoyed because you want to read about the characters you already know and love? That won’t happen here: you’ll enjoy the new folks, even the awful ones. Slaughter is a writer whose books I buy automatically. Loved this one!
Will was responsible for planning the honeymoon, and Sarah did not enjoy camping and was concerned when it began with a five mile hike up a mountain. To her great relief there was a beautiful mountain resort that was the epitome of a fairy tale cottage in the woods, only with a five star chef making dinner in the main dining hall. Will is so romantic, is all that Sarah could think, except for the strange family that ran the lodge. There was definitely a weird undercurrent of something ugly there, but that wasn’t Sarah and Will’s business. That was until their romantic midnight interlude was interrupted by a scream, and Will found Mercy, the daughter and manager barely alive in lake. The woman died in Will’s arms and they had to out themselves as GBI to both guests and owners to establish where everyone was at the time of the murder. When Faith finally arrives she says she always wanted to solve a locked room murder and this one is a doozy. Everyone at the lodge had a motive to kill Mercy, and there is dark and ugly talk everywhere and Will and Sarah don’t know who to trust. I actually guessed the real murderer, but then I guessed about three other ones too. This was one of my favorite Karin Slaughter books, because even though she always touches on tough subjects she was just a little less graphic with this one. Great five star read.
Karin Slaughter never disappoints. I plowed through this faster then I wanted to, I wanted to savor it more, go slowly, if I could, since I waited sooo long for this to finally come out. I was jonesing for some more Slaughter already, seems like it's been a couple of yrs now since her last book. Maybe it has? I've read them all, of course, most a couple times. Discovered her early into the Grant County series. Love them all. I wish we got a bit more Sara/Will stuff, but she does that on purpose, I know. Withholds. Occasionally I feel that she adds a bit too many plot twists, 2 try to keep us guessing, not b predictable, etc. Can get a bit too convoluted for my liking. I knew who the killer was at the beginning. No spoilers here though. Keep writing Karin, faster please, haha. PS. Not crazy about what u allowed them to do w/the Will Trent series. Lead actor is great, story seems well done, I don't have a problem w/changing races of characters, BUT the changed them too much! Amanda + Faith r nothing like their characters and that's just wrong. No Sara 2 ruin, thank God. Least i don't think so. I only watched 1 or 2 episodes. Was too changed for me. I know this isn't Outlander, book or series, so I get it. 😉
This was a great story, with solid characters. Pacing was good, with lots of little twist and turns, and then a few big twist and turns. Good ending
This was my Will and Sara, back again, at their finest! I read it without the face or voice of that terrible actor who plays Will on the TV series (which I only made it through 2 episodes). That show just doesn't work for me. Anyway, great story. I have always loved how she writes Will's personality and the way he deals with his history. He's a product of the system who succeeded in life. Unlike Dave! Ugh. He's awful. Poor Mercy. No one in that family ever showed her any. No Mercy for Mercy. Great book!
Everything you would expect from a Karin Slaughter novel and so much more. Interesting, well developed characters lend depth to an intriguing plot. That being said, the pieces fall into place as ypu read and the storyline isn't outlandish or confusing, just one you can't stop reading. I am left feeling satisfied, eager for more, and wishing it wasn't a year for the next book!
