INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the #1 New York Times bestselling author known for her “superb pacing, twisted characters, and captivating prose” ( BuzzFeed ), Lisa Jewell returns with a scintillating new psychological thriller about a woman who finds herself the subject of her own popular true crime podcast. Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summer crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday.

She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life. Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. Slowly she starts to realize that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home.
But, as quickly as she arrived, Josie disappears. Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat. Who is Josie Fair?

WOW. I was blown away by this book. This psychological thriller was very suspenseful and kept me guessing the entire time. Some of the secrets that Josie revealed were truly shocking. The formatting of this thriller is very unique because there are excerpts from news stories and the podcast that provide little glimpses into Josie's life, but purposely obfuscate the whole truth. The writing style was engaging and the story was very intriguing. Would recommend!
I don’t often read books like this, and there were some moments that I found a bit of a reach but it’s such a gripping story, well told. I found the Netflix setting details tedious but you can skip those without harming the narrative. A good summer read.
Wow! This is what a thriller is meant to be. Lisa Jewell has created a deliciously disturbing and intriguing story that will keep the reader enthralled to the end. I know I was! Alix Summers and Josie Fair meet on the night of their shared 45th birthday. Josie proclaims them “birthday twins” and approaches Alix, a well-known podcaster, with the idea of making a podcast about Josie’s life and her plans to change her future. Alix is intrigued by Josie’s unconventional relationship with her much older husband. They agree to do the podcast, and Josie spills all the astonishing and disturbing details of her life. But Alix does not realize that Josie is becoming obsessed with her, and she does not notice the impact that Josie is having on her life and family until it may be too late. Everything about this story works. The characters are interesting and well-developed. No one is truly likable, but some are more dysfunctional than others. Josie Fair appears to be meek and simple, but there are disturbing depths to her character that make for an unpredictable, thrilling narrative. Alix is so enthralled by Josie's story and how she can benefit from it that she does not notice as Josie insinuates herself into Alix's life. The action is paced perfectly. The narrative alternates between Josie and Alix's interactions in real time and excerpts from the podcast and the documentary. The documentary sections add just the right amount of suspense by hinting at events that the reader has not yet witnessed. Though the plot is somewhat predictable, the execution is so good that it does not detract from the success of the book. Honestly, I just love a dark, twisted, messed up thriller, and that is what you get with this book. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy this as well.
I recently started my reading journey and this was 2nd on the list. I give it probably 3.8/5 stars. Maybe I listen/watch too much crime documentaries, podcasts etc. The plot was good, but a little cliche. So much happens in the last like 80-100 pages. Easy read overall, took me about 3 days (again I am not an avid reader) .
Well, written from many different points of . This is not an American story. It is a British story. There is no real answer at the end. But it will overwhelm you.
I read in one day. It was very good, and the type of book I did not want to put down. I read it on dec 31st and it is now sept 1 st. I still remember most of the details about the book, and would read it again eventually. It’s a thriller/ mystery not the type that would scare someone (which I’m trying to get my mom to read it who hates scary books) I would recommend! I do wish I had rated it 4 stars, since it doesn’t give me the feeling other 5 star books have. I’m going off what I gave it on good reads at the time though.
Although at first, I was a little frustrated with the change in perspectives (Protagonists, Netflix documentary, and podcast recording excerpts) but I guess I can say I enjoyed it. It kept me turning pages as I wanted to get to the bottom of the mysterious Josie Fair’s life. This story is about two women who happen to go to the same pub on their birthday nights. Alix and Josie. Josie is transfixed with Alix and as the evening unfolds finds her in the restroom and introduces herself as “Hi! I am your birthday twin!“ Alix is a semi famous podcaster and decided to do a podcast about Josie’s life change (that she is going to begin). This is when the real story begins. The whole novel alternates from Josie, Alix ans the podcast interviews or excerpts from a (future) Netflix documentary based on the podcast. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys psychological suspense novels. MINOR SPOILER ALERTS: The author initially has us thinking Josie’s husband Walter is a pedophilic control freak. However, the more Josie talked the more crazy we realize she is. Or, how damaged she is if the things she is saying are true. Then, of course we eventually get the truth. I loved the ending (Josie’s side of the story)
Author is fantastic. This book was interesting and had me wanting to keep reading past bedtime! Different kind of story too, enjoyed it immensely and recommending to my friends!
