About This Book

“Once you start reading, be prepared, because you won’t want to stop.” —Oprah Winfrey OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK New York Times bestselling author Lara Love Hardin recounts her slide from soccer mom to opioid addict to jailhouse shot caller and her unlikely comeback as a highly successful ghostwriter in this harrowing, hilarious, no-holds-barred memoir. No one expects the police to knock on the door of the million-dollar two-story home of the perfect cul-de-sac housewife. But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin has been hiding a shady secret: she is funding her heroin addiction by stealing her neighbors’ credit cards.

Lara is convicted of thirty-two felonies and becomes inmate S32179. She finds that jail is a class system with a power structure that is somewhere between an adolescent sleepover party and Lord of the Flies . Furniture is made from tampon boxes, and Snickers bars are currency.

But Lara quickly learns the rules and brings love and healing to her fellow inmates as she climbs the social ladder and acquires the nickname “Mama Love,” showing that jailhouse politics aren’t that different from the PTA meetings she used to attend. When she’s released, she reinvents herself as a ghostwriter. Now, she’s legally co-opting other people’s identities and getting to meet Oprah, meditate with the Dalai Lama, and have dinner with Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

But the shadow of her past follows her. Shame is a poison worse than heroin—there is no way to detox. Lara must learn how to forgive herself and others, navigate life as a felon on probation, and prove to herself that she is more good than bad, among other essential lessons.

The Many Lives of Mama Love is a heartbreaking and tender journey from shame to redemption, despite a system that makes it almost impossible for us to move beyond the worst thing we have ever done.

An amazing rebirth of life

I was fascinated with her story of addiction and amazed that she functioned as well as she did. She is a super smart person who thought she could get away with drug use. Her journey into jail and the tangled life there is eye opening. You don't want to go there! A harrowing tale of bad influences and the good influences of her children that kept her going. She had people that saw her goodness and in the end she worked with some pretty impressive names-The Dalai Lama, Desmond TuTu and Oprah!

As a whole, the book offers inspiration and hope. How important hope is! There was a point in Love’s life when she wanted to end it, but, when there’s life, there's hope. Her life went from a living hell to blessed heaven. But it took work, fortitude, and a deep believe in one's worth. For those who feel trapped and hopeless, this memoir reminds us that “tomorrow is another day.” (Gone With the Wind).

I waited to read this book until I knew I could read it cover to cover. Oprah is right! You will not want to put it down once you begin reading it! It is such an extraordinary book and memoir. It stands out among so many other memoirs due to the radical honesty of the author Lara Love Hardin and the authenticity and vulnerability of her voice. She is unflinching in describing her heroin addiction and the losses she incurred as a result. But for me, the brilliancy of the book shines through with her time spent in prison - the terrible injustices of the prison system, and the SOUL level healing that occurs for her during and after prison while she makes a new life for herself and her children and family. Ultimately, this is an unparalleled book about growth and transformation. I cannot wait to hear Lara Love Hardin speak!

Such an amazing book and story. Lara narrating it made it even more captivating. At first, I wasn't really into it. It was something I listened to in the background while I drove. I don't know exactly when, but suddenly I was deep in the story and enthralled. I wasn't done listening to it before I bought the Kindle version and decided next time I teach Crime and Delinquency to make it a required reading. I have recommended it to several of my students who are interested in reducing recidivism and are majoring in criminology. Lara's vulnerability and rawness, not to mention her candor at our very broken parole system was an eye opener and a mini step into the world of parolees.

What an inspiring story about love, deceit, addiction, and bravery. Mama Love expresses that deep love that hurts so bad when you let your child down. This is a story of comeback and redemption.

This memoir covers a timely topic - addiction. That’s all you hear in the news. Overdoses. Fortunately this author overcame her addiction and in time and turned her life around into a successful well meaning life. I enjoyed the book. It was difficult reading about her incarceration, her guilt over leaving her four small children without a mother while she was in jail and the de-toxing was very realistically written - I imagine because she actually went through it - more than once. I liked her writing style and respect her recovery and success. CH

Laura Love Hardin, aka Mama Love, has experienced many lives and is still living all of them. Fortunately for readers, one of her lives includes sharing what she has learned along the way and writing incredible stories. As an accomplished ghost writer she writes true stories, and the truest of all is this memoir, her own story. It takes us from a troubled youth through years of horrifying addiction, living as “the neighbor from hell,” to imprisonment and recovery and finally finding, in the words of Oprah, the person she is supposed to be. Taking the journey with her is engrossing and ultimately inspirational and uplifting. Beautifully written, honest, and a compelling read. 6 stars!
