About This Book

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Snappy and accessible prose... America’s Deadliest Election is the kind of book that might generate fresh interest in our country’s brief post-Civil War attempt at creating a multiracial democracy. " — The Washington Post The violent election of 1872 that serves as a warning for today's divided politics.

From CNN’s Chief Political Correspondent Dana Bash, the fast-paced story of the extraordinary election that led to hundreds of murders, warfare in the streets of New Orleans, two governors of Louisiana — and changed the course of politics in our country. The Election of 1872 was the most contentious in American history. After both parties complained of corruption, neither candidate would concede, two governors claimed office and chaos erupted.

Rival newspapers engaged in a bitter war of words, politicians plotted to overthrow the government, and their supporters fought in the streets and attempted assassinations. The entire country watched in grim fascination as the wounds of the Civil War were ripped open and the promise of President Grant’s Reconstruction faltered in the face of violent resistance and the birth of the Ku Klux Klan. In this riveting book, Dana Bash and David Fisher tell the incredible, little-known story of the election that pushed democracy to the breaking point, and sparked historic events including: The Colfax Massacre, in which at least 150 Black men were killed by white supremacists The extraordinary train race from New York to New Orleans for control of the state government The election of the first black Congressman from Louisiana in the face of violent resistance The Supreme Court ruling that ended Reconstruction and became the foundation of Southern segregation, changing the American legal system for the next century Readers will find eerie parallels to today's divided political landscape and leaders willing to seize power no matter the cost.

A Cautionary Nonfiction Tale

S. Corman
September 16, 2024

This is a cautionary tale of what can happen when people put hatred above reason, party above country, and self importance above common sense. That it actually happened and took place in this country, is absolutely frightening! This is a nonfiction account of a gubernatorial election in Louisiana which led to the deaths of many people. They all died trying to vote. It took place after the Civil War, when Reconstruction was underway. And the south was having none of it. Well written and highly researched, this account makes our country's divisions today seem quite tame. It is hard to believe that our experiment in democracy nearly ended in 1868, with the strife continuing until the presidential election of 1872. This book really blew my mind! And I highly recommend it.

I’ve been waiting for someone to write about the 1872 election, given what is happening today. This very well written and researched book, though heartbreaking for all that was lost through the violence and polarization, delivers.

After seeing the book promoted on TV and learning a bit about the story I really looking forward to reading it. Boy was I disappointed! It feels like reading a long book report where the writer is just spitting out the facts of what happened in New Orleans with no real depth, perspective or storytelling. Somewhat exhausting to get through. I will probably not purchase another book written by a CNN anchor again.

I usually buy books at a deeply discounted price on eBay, but I rarely buy retail. But I do make exceptions occasionally. This book was one of them. I saw Dana's interview, and the book's story intrigued me. I bought it and began reading it. It is a page-turner. If page 18 is like the rest of the book, it will be one of my best books for the year. I'm saying this book was well worth the retail price to read it NOW, rather than waiting several years when my interest in might wane or I lose track of it. I'm always looking for a great book to read and this one is it.
