About This Book

The true crime story of a notorious arsonist and murderer who kept a Cape Cod town in fear thanks to crooked cops. The Cape Cod beach town of Falmouth seemed like a lovely place to visit. But those who lived there year-round knew its other, darker side… Local businessman and infamous bully Melvin Reine had started setting the homes of his so-called enemies on fire.

Few of his victims—or even the police—ever dared to implicate him. Because those who did would pay the price… Mysterious events kept creeping up in Falmouth. The disappearance of Melvin’s wife, a dead man found in a cranberry bog, a teenager slated to testify against Melvin who boarded a ferry, never to be seen again—was Melvin somehow responsible?

Only one police officer, John Busby, had the guts to press him for answers. One day he found himself on the wrong end of a sawed-off shotgun…but managed to survive the attack. This is the shocking true story about what can happen to an all-American town when evil rules.

Its hard to give 5 stars to such a travesty of justice or lack thereof. Falmouth police corruption and how this one man was allowed to do all he did is unbelievable except its all true. A piece of cape cod history that is out of sight to the tourists. Evil does rule in Falmouth and wherever his estimated 62 illegitimate children and family are up and down and off cape. Police Officer Bugsby and his family deserves better.

Just recently moved to Falmouth and hAD to read this! Very good, well written but a little sensational....the authors criminal journalism side is clear but doesn't necessarily make for an annoying read. True crime story that happened right down the road, can't beat that!

This was an amazing story of what I would call a crime syndicate on the Cape. The details were meticulously investigated and written in an appealing style. Two thumbs up.

If ever a book cried out for pictures this one did! And there were none. Now that is disappointing! Anyway, this was just an ok book. At times it could be confusing and the reader really had to pay attention to what was going on. There were quite a few characters and more than one murder within the same story. It is about a town paralyzed by fear of one of its own residents and how the police were willing to look the other way or sometimes even help the town bully with his crimes. Unbelievable! Almost all of the book was written using very very long "paragraphs" making it sometimes hard to follow and very hard to find a place to stop reading unless you read to the end of the chapter. There were also quite a few errors in the book that sometimes made it difficult to understand. Would I recommend this book to others? Only if there were no other choices to choose from.

Great research and investigation Mr. McPhee - nice job.

I actually lived in Falmouth when these events took place. I recognize the names of most of the police officers involved. Unfortunately, the officers that were involved in trying to bring this "evil" to justice had a major barrier -they were all good and honest police.. Move this "evil" into any large city in America, let him tell a police officer that he "smells smoke" or burn a Fire Chef's car in his driveway, and I can guarantee the "evil" would disappear overnight..

I cannot believe that I'd never heard of this case, as a lifelong Bostonian and Cape Cod enthusiast, I don't know how this case escaped my attention. Michele McPhee does an excellent job in chronicling this entire story and there are a lot of twists and turns in it. The book almost reads like a novel. Pick this book up...good stuff.

Intriguing story- unbelievable that it is all true. I met someone close to the family and they attested to its truthfulness. Fortunately times change and this is all in the past.. Have patience in the early parts of the book. The author interlaces several timelines, as it if were a screenplay, hah. Sometimes difficult to keep the players straight. I'm going to read it again next year now that I know all the players ;>)

Pretty well written although other that some small mistakes on the names of some Officers whom I knew from the Department. I had worked on the Falmouth Police Department prior to this event but when that attempted Murder of Officer John Busby happened I had already moved on to another Massachusetts Police Department from which I later retired. I don't recall another book I've read where I knew almost all the the characters involved. The book did hold My attention and within the first two days I had the book I had read it from cover to cover. I'm glad someone had written about this and brought the proper attention to this murder attempt and lack of support for John Busby at a time that should have been top priority. The reference to Evil in the books title was sure the proper reference. Thank You Mr. McFee for Your coverage in print on this crime.
