About This Book

~AN AMAZON TOP 100 BESTSELLER~ A spicy Beauty and the Beast meets The Handmaid's Tale . A thousand years of climate change, genetic engineering, and war destroyed civilisation as it was. From the remains came the age of The Trade and The Crown.

In return for resources, security, and a meaningful purpose, citizens accepted a life of service to the new world. Young Aster is no different. If selected, she will be the King's Silk Girl.

A common human bred to adore and pleasure him, and to provide The Cradle with healthy babies for The Trade. Adore. Pleasure.

Provide. That is her Meaningful Purpose. But King Rome is more monster than man.

As the heir of the genetically enhanced breed, he was designed to survive and rule this harsh new world. Through fear. Through intimidation.

Rome has a heart as black as his giant pet eagle's wings and a singular obsession—to reign. That stands until one day Aster puts her tiny human hand in his... Now she occupies his mind...

But The Trade upholds that love is not a virtue, and instead, a weakness. Nothing could be more dangerous to the regime than having its merciless king obsessed with a common girl Born For Silk. For readers who would enjoy a spicy Beauty and the Beast, meets The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, with the barren, wild backdrop of Dune by Frank Herbert.

Born For Silk is a romance-driven adult sci-fi novel set in a dark dystopian society. Warning: The Cradled Common is a series of interconnecting standalones. Pretty good read

The book was enjoyable, especially if you've enjoyed books by this author before. For me personally, I've always found this author's pacing a little bit hard to follow and hard to engage. But that's more of a personal preference, the story itself was good, the world building was really detailed and a lot of fun to learn about. I enjoyed the characters but they did feel a little bit flat, though with books that have a lot of world building I give a lot of leeway on that. I'd be interested to see what happens next in the series, so I will be reading the next book. Overall a very good read, and if you've liked this author in the past I believe you'll like this book as well.

Rome and Aster was such an intriguing and engrossing story. The imagination from Nicci had me so invested in this story. It was so easy to get caught up in the story from the start. All the characters involved, and the story line was so good. That ending with Rome and Aster with the baby oh my goodness, about holding the baby. So sweet. Loved it

Dystopian is not for everyone but boy did I love this!

OMG! What an amazing book! It's been a while since I finished a 500+ page book in under a week, but man, I could not put this one down. I don't think there was ever a moment in all 500 pages that I struggled to keep going or that it lagged. And that's not to say that there was nonstop heart-racing action, but just that it kept me interested from page 1 to page 500. What can truly be said about a true shadow daddy, except that we love them? We rarely get true shadow daddies who will put down any and all who threaten that which is his and which he has claimed. And when a shadow daddy says someone is his, you better shut up, sit down, and listen. They are possessive and territorial, they want to put that which they have laid claim to in a protective fortification and never let out And yet they know by doing that they will smother the warmth and love which has been given to them by their FMC. That is Rome of the SILK. He knows that if he goes to far. If he smothers and suffocates his precious little flower that she wilt and fade away. And the last thing he wants to do strip her of the humanity and innocence she has. And it's that fine line that he walks througghout the book that had me squealing at every tender moment. At every small smile he had just for her or "I love you" that he uttered. I dont remember the last time I squealed and kicked my feet the way I did with the gentle moments where Rome showed the humanity and heart he had only for his little creature. They are possessive and territorial. They want to put that which they have laid claim to in a protective fortification and never let it out. And yet they know by doing that they will smother the warmth and love which has been given to them by their FMC. That is Rome of the SILK. I don't remember the last time I squealed and kicked my feet the way I did with the gentle moments where Rome showed the humanity and heart he had only for his little creature. He rocks her to sleep at one point! Like, come on, how am I supposed to contain my squeals when he does something like that?!?! And onto our beautiful FMC... I don't want to say too much about Aster because I feel like, much like the gentle flower she's named for, her character is delicate. There is a fine line that is toed with the Silk Girls and their role in the story. Without a lot of context and understanding of the world-building of this story, I am unable to explain just what that role is, but only that it is done tastefully and with an air of respect. I adored Nicci's take and how uniquely it was done. It truly gave dignity to the Silk Girls and removed the shame that usually surrounds such characters. Now if you have read through this whole review and are still not sold on BFS, let me leave you with this... there is a giant genetically engineered wedge-tailed eagle named Odio. You're welcome.

This was a pretty good book. I really enjoyed how everything built and worked together, watching them both grow into their relationship despite tradition was A+. I really only docked a star because the ending felt really abrupt and the epilogue furthered that feeling. Overall, it was written really well and it was a well thought out plot.

It's no exaggeration to say I've been waiting for this book for almost a year and it was absolutely worth it! @author.nicciharris continues to be among my favorite authors, one that I have to read everything she has because they are just that good! Similar to her Kids of the District series, this new world immediately pulls you in and even though neither world is exactly safe, you kind of want to live there anyways? This is a little bit of a lengthy book and while I know that scares some people, it's absolutely necessary and perfect here. Nicci has so much world building; I can't imagine what a massive undertaking this was! The spice is a perfect amount, not too much as to not overshadow the story, not too little, and beautifully written. I fully agree with the comparisons to Handmaiden's Tale and His Pretty Little Burden. Rome and Aster's dynamic reminded me very much of Clay and Fawn and those are my favorite Nicci characters of all time 🤣. I do wish I could see more of Rome and Aster after the events of the end, but I have to hope we will see them again in a future book! So excited for Nicci and to see where this new world takes us!

I’m not always drawn to sci-fi or dystopian books, but I have loved Nicci Harris’ previous books, so I wanted to give this one a try. I am so glad I did. I was immediately drawn in and pretty much binged this book. The world-building was effortless. The characters were well-developed and complex. The story was beautiful. Though it seems the next book involves characters unrelated to this story, I am looking forward to it. My guess is that it will be part of a larger plot that ties them together. I can’t wait!
