I love this series and Nell. I love how ecology always, somehow, saves the day. Can the stories get a bit absurd? Yes, and that's part of their charm! My one problem with this series is Rav...with each book I hate him more. (Small spoilers ahead) At one point in this book, it seemed like he just might be gone for good but no such luck. And now if we get another, which I hope we do, it will likely be at Nell's wedding and the whole time I will be hoping the groom dies. Such a terrible character and not the good guy he thinks he is. He treats Nell like a fragile, silly woman when she is a strong, brilliant one. At least James recognizes her brilliance and never tries to hold her back. If you need proof James is the good guy and Rav a loser, just go back to the first book and compare how they react to Nell's internet photo scandal. Oh well, here's hoping the next book has the twist I know a few of us have been hoping for.
I've been enjoying the Dr. Nell Ward series, and I was delighted to get the opportunity to read the latest installment thanks to the publisher and Netgalley.. The books keep getting better and better. I don't think this particular book would work well as a stand-alone; I think readers would appreciate the characters and their interpersonal relationships much more if they read the books in order. The story was very suspenseful with threats on Nell's and others' lives, and there were lots of twist and turns and suspicious characters. I highly recommend this book and the series, and I look forward to the next.
I always look forward to a new book in this series, and this one didn’t disappoint. The author found a great way to keep the story fresh, it’s centered on familiar ground, Nell’s family estate of Finchmere, has many of she and Rav’s friends we’ve come to know, while at the same time bringing in a whole cast of new characters who are new tenants of the estate, providing local shops and produce, along with the reverend of their chapel. A fete to celebrate those rewilding of local landscape and to encourage more to learn about it, as well as a chance to celebrate local endeavors ends up being the backdrop for murder. Nell is already facing the loss of her home, and nearly her life, to a fire, now they need to determine if that is related to a stalker and the deaths. With a large cast of suspects and ample motives, this kept me guessing. The motives and emotions attributed to the characters are very realistic, nothing is too far fetched, except I do hope Nell and Rav have finally learned their lessons about going to chase after clues on their own! I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys not too cozy mysteries with an intelligent cast and an interest in eco friendly practices. Thank you to Embla Books and NetGalley for an advance copy.
I have to admit, I'm not sympathetic to Rav. He could have put his foot down innumerable times to discourage his overzealous fans, and put a stop to the stalker. He does not come across well at all, and I thought Nell was far too tolerant and forgiving. He nearly got her killed several times, and he DID get 3 others killed. I don't know if the author intended it, but I like James much better and wish Nell had chosen him, despite having a shared passion for rewilding and eco-research with Rav. The Big lesson here is: Women should never fall in love with a gorgeous man.
Possible spoiler? Rav, Nell, and James and his SOCO team are kept at it trying to solve not only another murder, but try to handle a stalker or so.
At the heart of the picturesque Finchmere estate, Dr. Nell Ward’s family home becomes the focus during its first summer fete. Nell and her partner, Rav, are riding high on the success of their sustainability and rewilding efforts, which have even turned into a YouTube sensation with "Following Finchmere." Hoping to inspire others to embrace eco-friendly living. Unfortunately, behind the scenes is not as perfect as everything seems. A huge fire destroys a beautiful property, that Nell cherish’s and Rav begins receiving unsettling messages. Unable to understand why this has happened, they seek help from their friend, DI James Clark. When a body is discovered after the fire, and identified to be in relation to the estate. The situation becomes more terrifying. With hundreds of visitors attending Nell & Rav’s fete, a killer will be hiding in plain sight…. Leaving everyone in a precarious situation. This story effortlessly combines the quality of a cozy mystery with the of suspense of a thriller…. Dr. Nell Ward, a smart and resourceful conservation ecologist, somehow always ends up right in the middle of trouble—usually stumbling upon unexpected deaths and crimes. While the story keeps that warm, cozy vibe, it also delves into some very serious moments, making it stand out. The plot is packed with twists that keep you on your toes. As a newcomer to the Nell Ward Mystery series, this did take me a moment to get familiar with the characters, but the story quickly drew me in. Although maybe starting from the beginning of the series might give you a more in-depth background, this book is stands perfectly well as a satisfying stand alone, giving you, the reader, quick escape. And the setting, I found it to be simply enchanting! I want you to Imagine a lush landscape teeming with bees and butterflies, which adds a magical touch to the story. Whether you're enjoying the book in your garden or curled up inside, this book is sure to suck you in. 📚🌸🦋 Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books.
I have read all the books in this series so far and appreciate the continuity of the events and characters from book to book. I also enjoy the reliance on ecological data being used as clues or evidence in solving the crimes. The protagonists are likable and empathetic.
