About This Book

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A gorgeous, witty account of birding, nature, and the beauty around us that hides in plain sight, written and illustrated by the best-selling author of The Joy Luck Club • With a foreword by David Allen Sibley “Unexpected and spectacular” —Ann Patchett, best-selling author of These Precious Days "The drawings and essays in this book do a lot more than just describe the birds. They carry a sense of discovery through observation and drawing, suggest the layers of patterns in the natural world, and emphasize a deep personal connection between the watcher and the watched. The birds that inhabit Amy Tan’s backyard seem a lot like the characters in her novels.” —David Allen Sibley, from the foreword Tracking the natural beauty that surrounds us, The Backyard Bird Chronicles maps the passage of time through daily entries, thoughtful questions, and beautiful original sketches.

With boundless charm and wit, author Amy Tan charts her foray into birding and the natural wonders of the world. In 2016, Amy Tan grew overwhelmed by the state of the world: Hatred and misinformation became a daily presence on social media, and the country felt more divisive than ever. In search of peace, Tan turned toward the natural world just beyond her window and, specifically, the birds visiting her yard.

But what began as an attempt to find solace turned into something far greater—an opportunity to savor quiet moments during a volatile time, connect to nature in a meaningful way, and imagine the intricate lives of the birds she admired.

Lovely book, but lousy shipping

The book itself is absolutely lovely and charming. However, I advise buying from your local bookstore since Amazon takes well over 2 months to ship and deliver it. Also, was shipped in a plastic shipping envelope that had zero padding so the corners and spine are damaged. I should return it, but I waited so long for it that I’ll keep it.

During COVID I became a bird nerd, learning about the feathered creatures that live all around us, or that migrate through. The birds gave me so much pleasure and through them I learned so much - and continue to - about the complex and beautiful world around us. This book fits me perfectly. The illustrations are completely charming too. I’ve given this book as a hostess gift to friends who, like me, have gained an abiding appreciation for the wonder of the birds we live with.

A wonderful book for any bird lover present or future! Amy Tan's playful but astute observations of her neighborhood birds, not to mention her beautiful illustrations, are bite sized pleasures...comfort food for those of us who have been watching birds for years; delightful bait for others to get the birding bug. I'll be putting this book in several stockings this year.

The book is beautiful! Purchased it for my daughter, a bird lover as a gift. Lovely illustrations and writing by one of my favorite writers! My one complaint and one I’ve seen mentioned several times is it arrived with a crinkled corner of the dust jacket! Doesn’t come in a box but a bubble envelope.

Worth the Wait & the Price!

After hearing Amy Tan discuss the book in an NPR interview on 06/10/24, I rushed home to order it, and today (08/06/24) it finally arrived. It was definitely worth the wait, and the price. It is beautiful, it is amusing, it is informative, and altogether it is even more delightful than I had anticipated. This is a somewhat belated Father’s Day present so I’m ordering one now for my D-I-L’s October birthday, with fingers crossed that it will be delivered in time. (And even if it’s late it will be well worth the wait.)

If you love birds. . . . this is the book for you

During COVID years, I took an online drawing class and noticed that Amy Tan was also taking the class and sharing some of her drawings. . . .well, . . . . she turned them into a book. Well-written and lovely illustrations of the birds in her back yard. Informative and fun!
