About This Book

After a long march across the empire, Gregory finally made it to Krogga. Going through Krogga itself wasn’t wasn’t terrible, but it did come with the uniqueness of the country. Honor fights between his men and local Kroggian youths were sanctioned every night.

Because the magi showed himself as honorable by accepting the duels and the local customs, Gregory fostered goodwill with the Kroggians, helping smooth his way to Krogheim. Ambassador Rudit Glowstone, Grandmaster of Aether’s Guard, greeted him upon his arrival in the capital. After a brief meeting, she let him go to his wives and friends, arranging for them to have the few days off that Yukiko had requested.

That was why Gregory spent his first two days in Krogheim going through the steps required to marry Ling, Clover, and Roshana. Gregory had to fight his way to the temple as per tradition, even having to put down a berserker champion who had stood in his way— the locals accepted the match as being honorable, as the berserker’s bloodlust ensured that one of the two of them was going to die. Gregory was allowed to marry his three friends in a ceremony that barely deviated from local customs.

He spent the next two days with his new wives, then all of his wives, making sure all of their desires were thoroughly met. Because Gregory had killed a champion on his way to the temple, the Krogheim council asked to speak with him. His prowess and acceptance of their local customs had them extend an invitation for the new year festival to the embassy, but specifically to Gregory and Jenn, as both had proven their strength to the Kroggians.

The festival led to new connections with the other ambassadors, most of whom promised to visit after the week-long festival. Jenn and Gregory found themselves in the finals of the festival duels, but both would end up facing the newest high champion of Krog, Ragnar Ivarson. The massive warrior defeated Jenn with her chosen fighting style of speed and his skill with weapons.

When Gregory and Ragnar fought, though, small problems crystallized. Ragnar wasn’t just a high champion— he was Krog reborn. Having found Aether again, he promised that they would talk soon, and he’d even bring his sister with him.

I’ve read each book in this series at least 3 times, (this one excepted since it just came out), and can recommend the entire series wholeheartedly. The characters, world setting and environs are enthralling, with enough detail to capture your attention without being over done. The stories and their progression are well paced. Thank you sir for a wonderful read.

I admit I am a huge fan of D.S. & love all his books/series, but this one has a tendency to make me over-emotional. The chapters surrounding a mother’s love are particularly hard for me. That being said, they are also very pertaining to the circumstances & just make the story greater. Please keep coming up with great stories & entertaining characters!

Greg's second year in Krogga is much slower and calmer than his first ... until it isn't. Greg and his family and friends have won the respect of the Kroggians, which means the first third or so of this book is s...l...o...w. There are interesting moments as the family spends time with the reborn Krog and Vera, and a few revelations of the past come to light. But much of it is character moments, most of which advance neither the plot nor the characters involved. Then Ragnar launches his raid, and the plot along with it. The back half of the book doesn't quite reach "Mages of Buldoun"-level momentum, but it's close. There are duels, a war, multiple conflicts across four nations, assassination attempts, surprising developments, a tragic death, and a solid pun that Aria would have enjoyed. DS has four series going. One used to be good but has aged, as the old knight from the end of "Last Crusade" would say, poorly. One has just one entry but being as that entry is only 2/3 of a book and maddeningly unfocused, it's not looking promising. One is just abysmal, with a self-absorbed a-hole of an MC in a universe of aliens I would call dumb as rocks if I wanted to insult rocks. And then there is AR. It is hard to believe this is the same author, despite his unique voice, but AR is the manifestation of the promise DS showed with Alpha Company and hinted at in the first half of Binding Words (before that series jumped the shark with the house staff) and the last two entries of Apocalypse Gates. Maybe DS needs the other series to get the garbage out? I don't know. I just know I'm ready for AR10 right now, and the "Dune"-ripoff worms can eat everyone else.

Im not going to lie, this book was extremely challenging for me to rate. Normally im pretty confident about where i rate a book but this time im not so sure. There were parts i liked, parts i thought were amazing, and parts that were dragging me down. In a brief overview the first half of the book was pretty meh. Even the parts full of lore and intrigue were meh, mostly because they were cutoff just to preserve the story or in the worst case the author isnt sure yet. I dont want to spoil anything so i will leave it at that. Now the second half of the book was pretty great. The conflict in this book was very well done and the way gregory has to grow and use his power is very well done. The second half of the book i couldnt put down and couldnt wait to see what happened. The series is at an interesting point and where we go from here is anyones guess. I have no idea what the author is going to do but i know im all in on this series.

Another wonderful sequel for this incredible series!

What a fantastic storyteller, DJs talent really shines in this series. I thought I could wait until after work to finish this but when it came time to get ready I was 25 chapters in and already hooked again, I… may have called in sick so I could read this cover to cover lol. I can’t wait for more of Greg & Family to come out! In the mean time I’ll eagerly await the audiobook for Andrea Parsneau’s talents to bring these wonderful characters to life.

You get hooked fast.
