This book was very informative and well made. Lot of information I did not know about the National Parks.
I have multiple National Geographic travel books, but don’t understand why they won’t make an e-book version- the books, while gorgeous, are bulky and heavy for taking along on a trip. My other issue is that Dinosaur National Monument is marked on the map as being in Colorado, but is listed under Utah. After multiple times of flipping through the Colorado section looking for the entry, finally went to the index to find it listed in Utah. I understand it straddles both states, but then should be listed in both states.
I love this book. I saw it on display at a dog boutique and it wasn’t for sale. I found it here on Amazon for a great price. It’s a great addition to my outdoor book collection.
If you are looking for information about a particular National Park or Historic Site this is an excellent place to begin your search. If you are browsing in hopes of finding places you may want to visit, again this book will serve you well. Author Mel White has covered everything. Every unit, over 400 in total, of the National Park System is covered here with basic information, and for many one or more photographs are included. Mel gives the telephone number and URL for every unit's website and sometimes other contact information as well. More popular sites receive more coverage and may also include maps. If your potential or casual interest begins to turn into a more intense one, the book helps you make the next step to obtaining more information. This is the kind of book that if you lay it down in a convenient place you may find yourself picking it up from time to time almost without realizing it. Would I have liked more illustrations and maps, and coverage of the National Monuments managed by the Bureau of Land Management and other federal agencies? Of course, I would, but that would have made an already big book even bigger and somewhat defeated its intent of covering the National Pary System. It is a great book and one capable of giving much use and pleasure for years to come.
I bought this guide to prepare for my road trip to the Western and Southwestern US and to plan my visits to our various National Parks. The detail and information was a great way to prepare and based on the parks I visited and hiked, I would say the information is accurate, right down to defining the difficulty of the various hiking trails. Worth every penny spent on this book.
This book is a great guide to the U.S. National Parks. There are so many parks that can be overlooked. This guide brings them to light. The book was a great gift for my husband, who is thrilled by the amount of information included. It is a great buy for any park lover, hiker, wanderer, or lover of the outdoors.
Beautiful detail and great almanac detailing Americas National Parks! Highly recommend
