This is a fine read. It didn’t click for me, but I am pretty sure I understand why people like it. It’s a young adult mystery (maybe teenager?) toned down in terms of violence, language and harshness. There are layers of mystery and those get slowly peeled, adding to the suspense as we try to figure out what happened 5 years ago. The mc has an interesting personality, though you should not expect any complex motives or something surprising in that area. She is the good, clever persistent mc, who kinda mindlessly throws herself into the fray. Good for us! The rest of the cast is not thoroughly explored, other than the girl whose murder is investigated. There are twists and turns in terms of who is the main suspect, not something spectacular. The story in general is clever, but don’t expect anything mind blowing. I am trying to figure out why I was not impressed as much. Maybe the story was not that deep for me, or maybe the characters were relatively shallow? I also don’t like it when the mc does things / goes somewhere he shouldn’t- it makes me feel nervous and stresses me out. While I enjoyed reading this book, I was not hooked into reading this so much to drop my other activities. I did not lose my sleep. It’s a fine read and I would recommend it for a mild mystery. I am not waiting to start on the next one though right now
I loved this book!! It had me on the edge of my seat from the beginning pages, as cliche as that sounds. A great, detailed plot without being too difficult to understand. Holly Jackson is a phenomenal writer.
I originally picked up this book to branch out on the genre of books I normally read, which is romance. I heard such good things about it pretty much ever social media platform. From tiktok, to Instagram, to Goodreads, to even some Facebook posts. When I say this book is a really good book. I am telling the absolute truth. Other people may not like it for their personal reasons. But I for one very much enjoyed it. It only took me two days to read the whole thing (while doing projects in the middle). The pacing was very good. There was no random moments put in-between the key things for the mystery. Everything that happened, or was said had a meaning and lead to the whole conclusion at the end. I liked that it didn't put ravi and pip's budding chemistry at the main points at all in the story. It was a sub plot, that u would see every so often through the book. Specially considering I picked up the book because I wanted to get away from romance. The ending was great. The plot twist had me in my bed trying to figure out what I hadn't payed attention to. It was freaking great. I would recommend this book to anyone. Any age, any gender. This is one of those books that pretty much everyone would like.
This one was such a FUN read and I had a hard time putting it down. I loved the story telling and the pacing was excellent, and was overall just an easy and enjoyable read. I'll admit this story does require some suspension belief... For a high school girl to start her own murder investigation, and knowingly put herself in danger, talking to known drug dealers, etc was a bit much. And everyone she interviewed just seemed to spill too much detail all too easily, which just seemed all to convenient if I put too much thought into. But that being said, the way the author wrote the story made it easy for me to disregard those things and still enjoy the book! I really enjoyed the main character and her gumption. She was very easy to root for and I loved her personality. I do think a little more effort could have been put in to develop her character more, and add a deeper layer of connection for the reader that I think would have taken it to the next level. But once again, overall characters were very well done! It's hard for me to enjoy young adult books, but I did really love this one! Didn't have the usual level of immaturity I often find in other young adult books, so this was very enjoyable for me. Can't wait to read the rest of the series, and even more excited for the TV show!
This book is indescribable. This is the book that got me back into reading. I LOVE the plot of the story. It really keeps you in the loop. This book kept me up at night reading it, and I could visualize the characters and try to think of what could possibly happen next. that’s how you know it’s really a good book. It didn’t start off slow, it started at just the right pace, it started off with a little backstory and then went right into the thriller of the story, probably from the first to the third chapter it starts off like that. I also love the interviews that Pip does. It’s really cool and I love how Holly Jackson didn’t use quotation marks for the dialogue in the interviews, because sometimes too many quotation marks lead me to skip a few lines and then I can’t enjoy reading the story. I love the uniqueness of some of the pages, without it using pictures of the characters, which is something I really like, cause it gives the readers a chance to visualize in their own. From the interviews, to maps and notes and boards, it’s truly unique and something I really like. It gives off its own flair. I am buying the other books of this series because I HAVE to know what happens. This is a big win for me, and it has changed my perspective on reading. This is something I will continue throughout my life, and thanks to the few books I’ve read, including this one. I’d recommend this book to everyone! It really is the perfect book, from someone just starting to get into reading, to people who have read for a long time. GET THIS BOOK!!! I CANT SAY IT ENOUGH
