I enjoyed this comedic fantasy adventure, probably the first of many. The characters are likable, the relationships are heartwarming, the world is mysterious and interesting, and the theme is sweet. However, it is flawed. It is wordy, with excessive descriptions of set dressing, and emotional reactions. This hurts the pacing, bores the reader, and weakens the jokes. I understand that Mr. Hayes has to let his fingers scream for hours, but this story has the content of three chapters in most serials.
An enjoyable, if very short, start to the series. Good writing style and action elements. Neat magic mechanic. There was a lot of self-doubt & head time, but now that the MC is established I hope we can enjoy more action and adventure. I thought the ending was perhaps rushed, but again, that just leaves more material for the next book!
Another great book from Drew. It's fun, interesting, and has plenty of hints of future lore. Looking forward to the next one!
Love Drew’s novels and this is no exception. Such a wholesome and warm story, love the characters and can’t wait for book two!!
Who doesn't like stories about doggos? This was fun. Wumble is awesome, Wanda is great. The world Hayes has built is interesting. There's enough here for adults to enjoy but at the same time kids and teens will enjoy it just as much.
Cute cozy story that needs editing. The characters and ideas are fantastic, but an editor needs to check this over. Otherwise great fun.
An unexpected bit of alien magic added into a story about a girl and her dog in a world where bonding with your pet allows you to become a wizard. Well written characters and a fun adventure. Looking forward to book 2.
Drew hits another home run with this YA story! It starts quickly and engages the reader into a fantasy world where humans must bond with other creatures or elements in order to use magic and get stronger. Wanda is lucky enough to have Wumble, a corgi, as her companion. I won’t spoil it, but Wumble is more than he appears, and Wanda hasn’t a clue. She is an engaging heroine though, and easy to like. I can’t wait for the second book in the series!
