Twilight was one of the series that made me fall in love with reading all over again. That kind of elation that when you get to the end of the book you must grab the next in the series..but this book kicks it up to high gear from the very first paragraph. Grace is naive to the Paranormal academy she has been brought to in Alaska. The students don't shapeshift in front of her and her cousin Macy answers her questions in a vague enough way that Grace remains in the dark until she wakes from a fatal night in the infirmary and looks under the bandage on her neck. Tracy did a phenomenal job with suspense with who and why there was someone trying to kill Grace. Only avid readers of Paranormal would know it was Jaxon whose emotions were causing earthquakes, I especially loved the one caused when Grace was in the tunnel with Flint and Lia. Personally I would have turned around and not entered the tunnel at all ..it was obviously a trap. I would have liked a Dual POV ..the additional chapters at the end of the book with Jaxon's POV were exactly what was needed to make this a 5 star book. We needed his raging thoughts , we needed the backstory and history of his family dynamics, we needed to hear how tender his thoughts were the moment he saw her, because he fell first..and that trope is what seals it for me. I loved this couples banter, the silly knock knock joke texts, and the breakfast he had sent to her ..with Macy looking on in awe and explaining how hard it is to get fresh fruit out of season in Alaskan wilderness. Jaxon showed how he would give her everything in the small things, then the big things dancing midair with the Northern Lights all around them was possibly the most beautiful scene I have read in a long time. I stayed away from this book for years because of the cover.I felt it was too much like Twilight..the black and white with blood really felt too much like copying. I am glad my Bookstagram buddy read group decided to read this together, because I was completely hooked from the first page. The audiobook was excellent too, what would have made it perfect would have been Dual narrators with Joe Arden or Teddy Hamilton reading the Male characters. The action scenes moved this book to a solid 4.5 for me, and how fearless Grace was at the end. A human with no powers who would do anything to save Jaxon..hell hath no fury of a woman whose watching the love of her life die. And Grace who had been thrown around like a rag doll, and injured countless ways didn't flinch in the end..she didn't want to live in a world without Jaxon . A perfect ending on a cliffhanger to make you run for book 2.
This story I grabbed as I have been interested in it for a while, and I want to see if it was as good as the hype. Grace is on the brink of an epic adventure out in the far reaches of Alaska. The author adds in some fantastic dialogue that makes you chuckle. The author has creative chapter titles for her book. It is interesting. So Grace has moved to this academy with some of her family due to her parents passing. The guy she meets is obviously the first clue that this book is paranormal in nature, and Grace might just be a mere human she might not be, but does she know. He comes with a wired warning after his jerk face intro. Jaxson is a force so far, and when he comes to her rescue, he definitely sets up my spidey senses. Flint is a pretty boy, and he seems sweet. Katnere academy, in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness, is a castle-like none other. I love that the author included a popular Netflix show. I mean, why not? It might hold similarities to Grace's circumstances. But even at that, we still don't know precisely what is being hidden at the academy. Things heat up in the time span she is there, and not her curiosity is getting the best of her. I love the Twilight reference in this story, but the characters are still vague on the paranormal in this school. Grace is an absolute mess, but she does seem to migrate to danger. People are starting to show their true colors, including Jaxson and Macy. But I still don't know what paranormals are in this story. I feel bad for Grace as she seems to get stuck in Jaxsons hot and cold flashes and, of course, team Jaxson and Team Flint. Ahh, the paranormal world gets revealed finally, and this book contains all sorts of species. I won't reveal them all as I have the fun of reading this was figuring it out. Once you know, the first part of this book makes more sense. However, there is still a nagging question about why Jaxson commands so much respect? Finally, we get to the real romance of this story, and oh, it is swoon-worthy! Jaxson is a force to be recommended when he finally makes up his mind. This book gets even more intense and action-packed toward the end of it. Omg!! Just as I thought we were done with one crisis, the next one happens. I'm surprised by the turn of events. This book ends on a massive cliffhanger. I'm dying to read more. Grace and Jaxson are magnetic in this book. Their romance rivals some of the great paranormal ones. I loved every minute of Grace's broken, stubborn, teenage self. Jaxson honestly came off as a jerk most of the time, but he was gentle with Grace. This book so didn't go the way I thought it would, and I loved the surprises in it. I like the themes in this story overcoming grief, fighting for love, protection. This was a very YA read no steam in this story. I can't wait to read for in this series. I want to know what happens to Jaxson and Grace. I do like the exclusive look into Jaxson's point of view at the end of the book. This takes us back to the first day of school but from Jaxson and the order's point of view. So this seems to be but and pieces of his viewpoint with some of the more intense action scenes from the story.
