A few years ago we inherited an audio cassette version of "The House on Pooh Corner" read by Charles Kuralt. My husband and I enjoyed it so much that I got onto Amazon and started researching audio versions of the complete Pooh collection. I finally settled on this set, read by Peter Dennis. I won't lie, after growing up with the Disney version of Pooh, these took some getting used to. However, now that we've been listening to them together (with our 4 and 2 year olds)for a few months, I can't stand Disney's Pooh! Peter Dennis captures all of the wit and humor of A.A. Milne's characters and stories that Disney has entirely left out. Even Charles Kuralt's rendition falls flat after listening to the rich, colorful voices performed by Dennis. We'll be listening to these CDs as a family for years to come so I consider this purchase a wise investment in our literary and driving pleasure.
The recording itself is top-notch (5 stars). My 3 year old LOVES listening to these stories. However I had to take 1 star away because, as other reviewers have stated, I'm very surprised at the shoddy production of the actual CDs: there is no indication of what tracks/stories are included on each of the 8 CDs (each CD has the same 4 stories printed on it). Because others may find this helpful, here are the tracks that are actually recorded on each CD: CD 1: The House at Pooh Corner 1. Introduction, Dedication, Contradiction 2. In which a House is Built at Pooh Corner for Eeyore 3. In Which Tigger Comes to the Forest and Has Breakfast 4. In Which a Search is Organized, and Piglet Nearly Meets the Heffalump Again CD 2: The House at Pooh Corner 1. In Which It is Shown That Tiggers Don’t Climb Trees 2. In Which Rabbit has a Busy Day and We Learn what Christopher Robbin does in the Mornings 3. In Which Pooh Invents a New Game and Eeyore Joins In CD 3: The House at Pooh Corner 1. In Which Tigger is Unbounced 2. In Which Piglet Does a Very Grand Thing 3. In Which Eeyore Finds the Wolery and Owl Moves Into It 4. In Which Christopher Robin and Pooh Come to an Enchanted Place, and We Leave Them There CD 4: Poems from Now We Are Six CD 5: Winnie the Pooh 1. Dedication, Introduction 2. In Which We are Introduced to Winnie the Pooh and Some Bees, and the Stories Begin 3. In Which Pooh Goes Visiting and Gets into a Tight Place 4. In Which Pooh and Piglet go Hunting and Nearly Catch a Woozle 5. In Which Eeyore Loses a Tail and Pooh Finds One CD 6: Winne the Pooh 1. In Which Piglet Meets a Heffalump 2. In Which Eeyore Has birthday and Gets Two Presents 3. In Which Kanga and Baby Roo Come to the Forest, and Piglet has a Bath CD 7: Winnie the Pooh 1. In Which Christopher Robin Leads an Expotition to the North Pole 2. In Which Piglet is Entirely Surrounded by Water 3. In Which Christopher Robin Gives Pooh a Party, and We Say Goodbye CD 8: Poems from When We Were Very Young
This collection of the A.A. Milne stories of Pooh Bear and Milne's exquisite children's poems are classics performed by the best of the best. My family listens to these cds on road trips and my boys like to listen to them during quiet time, too. The music played at the beginning and end is just so sweet, too, that it almost makes me emotional. There is something about Christopher Robin growing up and all his sweet little boy-ness that melts my heart. A.A. Milne captures something of idea and being of childhood that is truly unique and gentle and warm. I can't recommend this set highly enough even for people who don't have little ones. If you've ever loved a child or grandchild, you'd find something in these tales that resonates with you. If you have a child, this is a treasure to share early and often.
One of our favorites, feeds the imagination:)
Anyone who has ever tried to read the Pooh books aloud will know that the same style of writing that makes them so charming can also be very difficult to read aloud. Peter Dennis does a fabulous job of making the silly banter and childish story funny rather than completely nonsensical. He also uses different voices for each character and little "sound effects" as well (my children love to say, "Whorl, whorl!" now). The books last long enough to make them a very very good value. To be honest, we havent even listened to the two poetry collections yet, though they ("When we were very young" and "Now We Are Six") are two of our favorites to snuggle up and read together. I imagine they are very good too, but even with just the two "chapter books", the price is right. I should note that the cds come in two cardboard fold out sleeves within and cardboard slipcase; no jewel case or the like. This is not a problem for us as we don't move them between the car and the house much and only my husband and I handle them. If you intend for your kids to be handling these perhaps the storage would not be adequate. In any case, I highly recommend this set!
We bought this boxed set performed by Peter Dennis in 2015, and it has been our most favorite set to listen to on long car rides. Of course we love the works of A.A. Milne in the first place, and to have it performed so well has made it a delight to listen to both for our kids growing up as well as for the adults. It is absolutely amazing how Peter Dennis keeps up the voices and characters, and I personally find that they way he has interpreted them fits exactly with how I imagine the characters when reading the books myself. An absolute bonus is the British accent. After 7 years, some of the CD's are slightly damaged (the car's CD player is the biggest contributor to that), and so I'm buying a second set, for keeps. It is that good. Highly recommend this set.
