Still not updated to the current exam format that changed a year ago, so the section that breaks down how the exam is set up is useless. But the actual quant and verbal content is still relevant for practicing questions.
Great book, this helped me score 160+ on both quant and verbal, and get into the school of my choice. I had about 3 weeks of intensive daily prep. The practice materials were excellent and it has two complete paper tests, which in addition to the two online Powerprep tests, is plenty of good quality material. My advice is to go through the entire guide, interleave verbal and quant material so you have a healthy mix of questions, and finally do all the practice tests under timed conditions. If need be, spend some money on more practice tests (I used Manhattan online) to get the pace and more practice under time pressure. The exam was a bit harder than I expected, but ended up scoring better than my last practice test.
Got these books in preparation for the GRE I took back in June, and they were a HUGE help. I heard some people used Magoosh or another test prep service for the exam, but honestly these alongside the ETS practice exams were a huge help. I did all the practice sections in the books and wrote down each thing I didn't know to review, which was super easy because the key for each section had reasoning on how to get to the correct answer; including why the wrong answers were incorrect. A note I would add just for the GRE in general is to write down any and all vocab words you don't know from the exams! I saw majority of them on the actual exam and I am sure it is what contributed to getting a good score.
I purchased these as part of my overall study plan for the GRE. I had about a month to prepare, which is on the more expedited side of studying. I mixed this type of preparation with the Magoosh Vocabulary app (both on Android and iPhone) in order to just clarify and brush up on some vocabulary. I have always struggled with math so I knew I needed extra quantitative reasoning practice questions and explanations. I think I used the Quantitative supplemental book more than the main book to be honest. When I did a cold practice test (without studying) I scored about a 134 on the math section- so I pretty much got everything wrong. After studying with these materials and going on youtube watching Yaymath.org lessons on stuff I was really rusty on or things I didn't understand when they were taught to me back in high school to begin with, I was able to score a Quantitative 150 on the actual test - so I increased my score by 16 points in one month with using these books (luckily I'm going into social sciences at a top 30 ranked university so this is a decent score for what I needed). My verbal increased by about 3 points from my cold practice test, however that wasn't my main focus as I knew that I was going to get a competitive score regardless (I got a 161 on the actual exam if anyone cares). I've also always been a strong writer so my 5.5 on the exam was not surprising- I did not study for the writing part at all. All around I recommend this product because it has all the supplemental books you need no matter what your strengths are, and it's made by ETS so the question structure and type are all incredibly similar to the actual test. I also bought another book that wasn't made my ETS and I could tell the difference between the two quite a bit.
The general book is mostly the same information you can find for free on the ETS website, so that was mostly a waste of money. But it did have additional questions for the verbal/quantitative reasoning. The other two books are much smaller, but they have a good amount of practice questions. I would just recommend not buying the general book, but rather buying the two smaller books for verbal/quantitative reasoning if you can. You can read the information posted on the ETS website for free rather than wasting money by rereading the same information in book format.
A must buy for GRE students
The three "power-pack" books are easy to follow and use for GRE prep from the company that provides the exam. The directions are clear in how to use the book, as well as how the test is administered. They are also thorough, but not overly complicated when it comes to the particulars of testing; it walks you through the what, why, and how of the test and its questions in a manner that puts the one studying at ease if the study period is greater than 8 weeks.
The best study guides and tests! For example, on the practice test, missed questions have the page number for additional study material. Other practice tests do not include this helpful benefit!
