We've been to Kauai four times, the latest trip being in January 2024. For each of our trips we bought a new copy of this book and have never been disappointed. The restaurant reviews are invaluable, and the recommendations for activities are extremely useful. Our one big disappointment was the fact that the area in South Kauai that was called "the lithified cliffs" (Gillan's and Shipwreck beaches) had changed dramatically in the 17 years since we'd first visited them. What were deserted, peaceful beaches with extremely interesting rock formations were now beachfront for a hotel, several condos, and a golf course. We couldn't even find the lithified cliffs we'd loved so much. We were very disappointed that the book didn't mention the so-called "improvements" to this area, and the fact that these beaches are now tourist traps. (We were the only ones on those beaches in 2007; we were two of 100 in 2024.) Regardless, I'd recommend this book to anyone traveling to Kauai.
This book provides a very thorough guide through all of the island of Kauai. I used it to plan a trip there.
My family and I used this book to help plan our recent visit to Kauai, Hawaii. The book was very detailed and gave great advice about where to go on the island, what to do, how to do it, etc. Having never visited Kauai, I felt more prepared for our trip. I liked how the authors described the different regions of the island and how to navigate. We had a blast on our trip! Kauai is absolutely beautiful!
As travel books go, this is very good. It does point out the highlights to see on Kauai. As with most travel books, you can get much of this information (and up to date) with internet searches. But it works well as a companion to the internet searches. Glad we bought it.
This is the ONLY tour book I use when visiting the islands. There is a book written for each island. Great maps even for local roads. Reliable and informative. You can count on the reviews as they accept no advertising. Been using them for years!!
Even with frequent restaurant turnover or moves exacerbated by the pandemic, we found the handbook very useful for choosing amongst many dining options, as well as for choosing a few other ventures. No inaccuracies encountered.
This guide covers everything. Been using it for years and always get the updated edition to see what’s going on. Live the writing style as well.
A friend told me about this book when I told her we were headed to Kauai. It is written in an almost conversational and enjoyable way and provides lots of insights that I don't think you would know from any other book or website. Inside, there are many full color and easy to follow maps as well as beautiful photographs to give you a sense of what to expect on your sites. It highlights things not to be missed or things that may not be worth your time. The author calls things like he sees them, and doesn't seem to be paid for any of his opinions which I really appreciate. He also shares a lot about culture along the way. You will see from the photos I posted that I ended up tabbing the book because I found the organization a little bit confusing, he has a section for each shore at the beginning and then later sections for beaches, hikes, etc. So I tabbed the things that I knew I wanted to find quickly within each shore. A combination of reading this in advance of our trip, highlighting and tabbing what was important to us, and then also buying this same book's companion app while we were on Kauai for its drive tour, made our trip so much more enjoyable than I think it would have been without. There are many times that he gives you insights, such as when we went snorkeling at Tunnels Beach, it looks like you are parking in a no parking area but according to both his book and his app, you are allowed to park there. Without having that insight I would have been afraid to park and would have missed out on an incredible snorkeling adventure. The companion drive tour app is also amazing. We bought it the first day we were here and were so pleased to have that while we were driving on the island. There are many times where our cell signal dropped but that app never dropped because it's based on GPS. So he would call out turns that we may have missed without a cell signal, and he gave us insightful narrative along the way. Our son would always look forward to our drives on the island, and he'd say "is that Andrew guy going to be talking to us?" If I'd say yes of course, he'd smile and say oh good! Bravo to Andrews Doughty for penning an amazing guidebook and companion app.
